Dear returning senior student,
If you have logged into the registration portal and see a status of "Registration On Hold", it means your account has likely been placed into a hold group. This hold indicates that you have not yet met all requirements needed to complete your registration.
Why is there a hold on my account and where do I see it?
- Log into the Student Portal.
- Click on the notification icon (see the example below) beneath the NWU logo. If you have a notification, it will show a "1 or 2".

- Read and follow the instructions provided in the notification.
What is a financial hold?
To proceed with your registration, you will need to resolve the hold by making the first minimum payment.
- Self-paying students: Ensure any outstanding debt from previous years is settled and that the first minimum payment is made. The best route to follow is to pay your fees via the Payment Portal.
- Bursary or loan-funded students: Make sure to upload any bursary or loan letters onto the student portal under the My Documents tab - select Document Center.
- NSFAS students:
- Confirm that your funding has been approved by NSFAS.
- Only funded approved NSFAS students with outstanding debt are required to sign the Acknowledgement of Debt (AOD). You can sign the AOD by navigating to the My Bursaries tab and selecting AOD.
- For feasible payment arrangements, please log a request on the Student Helpdesk on the Student Portal. All requests will be strictly evaluated based on merit.
What is a GEO hold?
If you are an international student, this hold means that you must complete the NWU clearance process. Please reach out to the Global Engagement Office for details specific to your situation.
Only contact the Global Engagement Office at the campus where your application was accepted:
Always refer to the Summary of Registration Steps for Senior Students.
We hope this clarifies things for you.
