MARISKA OOSTHUIZEN-VAN TONDER

Hi my name is Mariska Oosthuizen-van Tonder

(yes, the first question is usually why the double barrel surname? It is my legal surname, my maiden and husbands surname combined but you are welcome to only use van Tonder)

I am a professional nurse, since 2011, specialized in Psychiatric Nursing Science. I enjoy teaching students and helping them to grow into professional nurses.

Week 2 - Facilitating

14 May 2020, 19:52 Publicly Viewable

I enjoyed this week as it was more practical for me as we got to work with simulated experiences and apply the knowledge more.

  • On thinking on what stage our current students are
  • On resolving a conflict situation
  • And experiencing the difficulties of working in an online group if you do not know the group members (it was difficult to contact all members in time and to get feedback from them) as we only looked at this activity by Wednesday.

Two different facilitating strategies that I found useful was

  • To make rules and set clear limits in the beginning of the course. When done later it may be frowned upon. It is needed that the facilitator takes a authoritative  role in the beginning of the course.
  • The other strategy that is helpful is to get to know your community.

The implications of the strategies are;

If you set clear limits in the beginning and take an authoritative  role it may avoid conflict situations that may emerge. If you get to know your community you are in a better position to anticipate their needs and their morale. You would be better able to support and motivate them where needed. If you know your online community you can identify emerging leaders and coach and mentor them.
