system:  effects: 
CNS
  • decrease blood flow within the brain
  • may cause vasodilation which increases cerebral blood flow and intracranial pressure
CVS 
  • Volatile drugs decrease mean arterial pressure either via myocardial depression or vasodilation
  • decreasing of preload and afterload can take place
  • a dose-dependent decrease in arterial blood pressure 
  • drugs can also depress normal cardiac contractility
renal
  • there is a decrease in GFR and urine flow and can also cause decreased renal blood flow 
hepatic
  • decrease in portal vein blood flow 
  • persistent elevation in liver enzymes especially in Halothane
uterus
  • potent uterine relaxant 
  • can also increase uterine bleeding after delivery of the baby
respiratory
  • bronchodilation
  • airway irritation 
  • decrease in tidal volume  and an increase in respiratory rate
  • all volatile drugs are respiratory depressants 
   
   

 

Major acute toxicities of inhalation anesthetics : 

  • nephrotoxicity 
  • hematotoxicity 
  • malignant hyperthermia 
  • hepatoxicity 
  • nausea and vomiting
