  • Explain your understanding of Vygotsky’s zone of proximal development.

This theory of proximal development focuses social cultural factors that are influencing cognitive development of children. It also emphasize the essential role of social interaction and language development. One must learn a child's learning needs and stages of development  by knowing their social enviroment and the influence that social factors on personal level.

  • Summarise the most important aspects of the learning theories of Erikson, Piaget and Vygotsky for your teaching practice as foundation phase teacher.

ERIKSON

Erikson's theory focus on the stages of psychological development and it draws focus on the fluence of social interaction and relationships on learning.

PIAGET

This theory focus on the emphasis of cognitive development on the notion that children learn by having interactions with the world and that they build new knowledge based on their existing knowledge and skills

It also emphasize the essential role of social interaction and language development. Why is it important to have basic knowledge about the musical development of foundation phase learners?

Basic knowledge will help them manage other subjects. What I mean is that learners will have the capabilities to integrate music with other subjects. They will be able to create songs and poems using notes from other subjects as lyrics. This will make their learning progress easy and fruitful.

  • Create suggestions for music activities which will support the various developmental areas of foundation phase learners (see 1.3.1 – 1.3.5). Formulate at least three music activities that could support and promote each developmental area.

Physical development

Give learners different music instruments so that they play them will singing. The playing of this instruments will help them develop fine motor skills.

Cognitive development

Learners will be asked to make a song using their mother tongue. A translanguaging teacher will translate the song in other languages. This will help learners to better their vocabulary and enhance diversity.
