Hi everyone. I am Tebatso and I am from Bloemhof.

I want to be a foundation phase teacher because I am not only passionate about kids but there is a sense of peace when one interacts with children. I am passionate about a lot of things but just to name a few, I am passionate about family, I am passionate about kids and my other passion is music.

To be honest, I was a bit nervous about LSKM 221, but after the meeting we had with our lecturer and realizing that we will be touching on music this semester, I am excited.

My expectations are that I will get a better understanding of some of the musical terms and scales myself (laughs). And also get to know and learn how important music is to the development of the learner. I am looking forward to LSKM 221. smiley

STUDY UNIT 4

  1. Arts integration is a part of how we explore the child as a holistic being. Arts integration has its fundamentals which can sometimes focus on one aspect or even more at a time. Some of the aspects that art integration can enhance in children are aspects such as motor skills, social skills, decision making and being creative. Being creative also comes with risk-taking because if one does not take risks, they will not know what the end results will be.

There are different types of arts, which all have different contributions to the development of the child. There are learners who tend to have difficulties engaging in a traditional class, in a traditional manner. But these learners somehow become alive when there is an integration of art, be it music or visual. Children learn through play, as we all know. And arts integration is also a form of play but learners are collecting, storing and sharing the information they have gathered through the arts integration. Most importantly, it develops the child HOLISTICALLY!

Interesting

  1. What I found interesting was how music can be integrated into a subject, not just routine. It can also be used as a class management strategy. To me classroom management is very important especially discipline.

Challenge

What I found challenging was understanding how to integrate music in mathematics especially for foundation phase. Their maths is not that complex, but which they reach grade 3, it becomes more complex to suit their grade and their age. Therefore finding the appropriate music for calculations or sums that they do is what I feel is a challenge.
