Part 1
I can't believe we are almost done with September, this semester is flying past very quickly. At the moment everything is good; most of my projects and assignments are in, so my workload has become less in the past week. We reaching the end of third term; so progress reports need to be written, which is taking up some of my study time, but I am managing to finish most of my work, studies and personal life goals. So I would say this week has been good thus far.
Part 2
I have learnt that there is more to it than just 'playing' when it comes to children in the Foundation Phase play. Children learn through play; this has been established by numerous of cognitive developmental programs. I have learnt that there are different types of play: Free play, guided play and directed play; and that the learners develop different skills and concepts through each type of play. Also, the different type of levels of social play have taught me that children at different age groups are building relationships and developing important social skills through each level of play.
The concept that stood out for me the most are the seven elements of play; this has shown me a different outlook regarding play and how important play really is in the classroom environment. This study unit has also shown me the importance of integrating play in the music education environment; it is a more fun and exciting way to learn and teach music and the children absorb more information through doing activities that interest them.
Part 3
1. If learners do not understand what is expected of them or they do not understand the content or concept being taught they tend to feel excluded, un-motivated and shy or embarrassed. Due to the different cultural backgrounds in the South African schooling system; some children might struggle with individual cultural morality or belief systems, because of the vast and differentiated themes and content that needs to be taught and utilized.
2. In the scenario the learners felt uncomfortable because they did not understand what was being sung, and they could not participate to their full capacity due to the lack of understanding the lyrics of the songs. Whilst others felt embarrassed and shy due to them having a personal religious or moral dilemma.
3. In future, if songs are chosen I would first teach the learners the meaning of the lyrics if it is a different language to their own, this will ensure that the learners can easily relate to what is being listened to or sung. They will feel part of the group and not excluded from the activity. As a teacher one should always ask the learners for understanding and to ensure that each one is on the same page; check for clarity and assist learners that still feel uncertain about a specific concept or topic. I would also communicate with my learners and always touch base to ensure everyone is comfortable and no boundaries are being crossed. An open relationship ensures that learners are comfortable in any situation and if they do not want to participate in an activity due to cultural or religious reasons, they have the confidence and capability to inform whoever is facilitating the activity.
4. It is very difficult to accommodate each and every learners needs regarding cultural, diverse and religious backgrounds without insulting or stepping on toes. One should always be as honest and transparent as possible and one should teach and instill respect and acceptance within the classroom environment. Learners should be taught all different cultures and beliefs; and the adult must ensure that they respect and understand each other. Children should feel safe; and have the capability of communicating if they feel unsure or unsafe. The most important thing a teacher must beware of is assumption; do not just assume based on your own understanding and knowledge that the content will be fine and relatable, always ask the learners and include them in the choice of content, song or activity- this will prevent situations like the one in the scenario. In order for children to feel included and accepted they should be given the opportunity to participate and communicate if their personal boundaries are being taken advantage of.
Hi There Abbie. I definitely agree with you about ensuring that children should be considered or even consulted when choosing songs and activities. Children should never feel uncomfortable as this will lead to them shutting down emotionally and may even have long terms effects on their self confidence.
Play for me was also something I had to realise is done intentionally in the classroom. The fact that there are different types of play. So when we do our lesson planning we need to make the time for it to sometimes to create a positive environment. :)
TRUST ME I can relate when it comes to academic reports. Our marks need to be in and the reports need to go home on friday so things are super hectic at the moment with deadlines and time management.
