I personally really enjoyed study unit 5, I loved the depth and intricacy of this study unit that it offered, It equipped me with the necessary skills on effective planning and different teaching and lessons strategies, it further draws close attention, to paramount importance of lesson planning. I strongly believe that after studying and reading through this study unit, I will be able to formulate and draw out lesson plans that will be beneficial to both teacher’s and leaners.

  • Teachers are not fully equipped and educated on performing arts and music integration
  • Teachers are off the “old fashioned” mentality that music and performing arts, are solely for enjoyment, and they do not understand the benefits that these components offer
  • Teachers are off the mindset that performing arts, should be an option, because statistics prove that very few learners actually, consider a career based on music and performing art
  • Schools are faced with economic and financial contestants, and believe that music and performing arts, is and additional cost to the school, Little do they actually realise that music and performing arts can be done at virtually no cost, but utilizing recycled materials.
  • Teachers are under the impression that music and art integration activities are too time consuming.
  • Teachers may have low- confidence, as they see music and art a daunting task, as they properly lack skills, to facilitate and execute art and music activities.
  • Teachers and schools are of the notation, that the teaching and learning process, needs to be carried out in a systematic procedure, in other words, classes should be quiet and strict rigid learning takes place, and they feel that incorporating music and performing arts, causes “noise” and instructed learning procedures.
  • Specific schools, might not follow prescribed documents, accurately, hence performing arts and music is left out.
  • Some schools are labeled as “ACADEMIC MASTERS’’, hence music assessments and performing arts are neglected and seen as unimportant.

Please explain how you would advocate for and heighten awareness about the importance of assessment when speaking with your HOD about your concerns in this regard.

  • I will have statistics and academic articles that prove that art integration and music, gives rise to major benefits such as socialisation and communication skills, better retention and memorisation statistic’s. I will also provide evidence on how music provides benefits in terms of languages and mathematic skills.
  • I will design and implement activities that include performing arts and music into my personal class, I will then video the lesson and have concrete evidence on the communication skills and cognitive development that the children learn.
  • I will make it possible to carry out performing arts assesmnets and music activities, that will indicate that there is basically no financial burdens that could be placed, all materials will be used from recycled material.
  • I will present the life skills CAPS documents, where it states that performing arts and music is actually written in black and white, and it is an important prerequisite especially in the foundation phase.
  • I will suggest an idea, that a survey should be carried out, within the school, to assess which teachers actually have knowledge on performing arts and music, for those who do not have any knowledge, they can be given ideas by teachers who do understand the concepts of performing arts and music.
  • I will suggest that the H.O.D, speaks to the principle to address the issue of neglect in terms of music and performing arts, and slot in a period that is allocated to these components, with this implementation, teachers would not be able to say that music and performing arts are too time consuming.
