Hi everyone. I am Tebatso and I am from Bloemhof.

I want to be a foundation phase teacher because I am not only passionate about kids but there is a sense of peace when one interacts with children. I am passionate about a lot of things but just to name a few, I am passionate about family, I am passionate about kids and my other passion is music.

To be honest, I was a bit nervous about LSKM 221, but after the meeting we had with our lecturer and realizing that we will be touching on music this semester, I am excited.

My expectations are that I will get a better understanding of some of the musical terms and scales myself (laughs). And also get to know and learn how important music is to the development of the learner. I am looking forward to LSKM 221. smiley

STUDY UNIT 1: MUSIC AND HOLISTIC DEVELOPMENT

14 Aug 2021, 18:40 Publicly Viewable

This has been a rather hectic week for me, generally and with regards to my studies. But nothing has hindered me from completing whatever task I had to complete.

Working through this study unit, well a lot has been brought to light. I have always known that music somehow plays a role in a child's development. But little did I know that it did not affect a certain portion of a child's development, but rather the holistic development of a child. I could have never thought that music can actually help develop a child's cognitive ability. I have also gathered that Erikson's stages of psychosocial development, Piaget's cognitive development theory and Vygotsky's zone of proximal development work hand in hand to ensure the holistic development of a child.

There are stages to a child's development and it is of importance that those stages are taken into consideration when teaching or incorporating music education.

When it comes to incorporating music education, I have no doubt that I will be able to pull it off. Not because I have a singing talent (LAUGHS) but because there is also passion for the art of music and children. Teaching music through movement will also not be a mountain to climb, because music says to us: "MOVE". Therefore if I had choose between physical activities and incorporating music education, I will, with no doubt choose music education. It will involve movement as well, thus improving physical development. Even when beating drums, they will be developing their gross and motor skills. The emotional development will happen when they listen to music and get in touch with the sound and are able to feel what the music intended them to feel. They will also be able to be sensitive towards the feelings of peers and others.

As I conclude this entry, I would like to say music is an important aspect not only for the development of children, but it can also serve as an aspect that helps to balance their lives as well as allowing them to express themselves and their creative abilities.

Till next time.smiley
