PAIN
Pain is considered as an experience that can be sensory or emotional and is mostly related to tissue damage. Pain intensity that an individual experiences can be indicated by using a pain scale, where 0 = no pain and 10 = most pain. Pain can be classified as sharp, dull, burning, or aching. When an injury occurs nociceptors fires which is responsible for the signalling to the spinal cord and from there to the brain. Reactions occurs because of motor pathway activation. These signalling system is universal to every single person but the sensitivity and efficacy of these pathways in the spinal cord and brain differs form person to person and therefor people experience the same amount of pain at a different level and is also the reason why some patients develops chronic pain (consistent pain > 3 months), acute pain that does not respond to any treatment. Pain can be caused by a biological injury where nociceptors acts for signal transduction to the brain. Pain is a mechanism to protect the body against ongoing injury / exposure to a harmful or potentially harmful situation/factors. Psychological factors also play an important role in the perception of pain as a person’s memory, state of mind, treatments believe etc. can influence these nociceptors and parts of the brain.
