As C. Ross (1996) gives out and explains an example of transformation of values of exchange and reciprocity. I am going to reflect on the networks that I move through everyday and how and what I exchange through them. I will focus on exchange (giving, receiving and return) as I elaborate further on how the social, economic, and cultural capitals play a role in exchange and reciprocity.
In 2023 I a gap year student and because I did not want to just sit and do nothing, I went to stay with my aunt and I offered to help her daughter whi was doing grade 7 with all the difficult school work. It was because of what I know and skills I attained that she had to trust and believe I will help her daughter progress to the next grade and we refer to this as cultural capital. It was impossible for her to reciprocate as this is a generalized exchange and reciprocity.
As for the social capital involved, my aunt would always hand out my CV to the managers she knows and those she have worked under. At times when my aunt's daughter is given school projects that requires some building or constructing I would contact my high school friend who was doing engineering to help out. I refer to this as a long term obligation that involves non kin as I also help out my friend's siblings whenever they need assistance with history because I am good at theory.
The economic capital refers to having access to money, in my case because my aunt had a stable job and was so kind ton acknowledge that i had needs and wants, whenever she had money, she would give me at least something. I never had to pay back my aunt because it was a generalized exchange and reciprocity that involves kin.
