Leisure and recreation is an important of our daily lives as people and more specifically students since it helps with our personal development and well-being. Making time to participate in leisure activities is also vital for sustaining a healthy and balanced lifestyle even though work and other obligations are important components of our daily life. Leisure and recreation provide us with any benefits such as lowering our stress and anxiety levels, providing opportunities to create and strengthen social connections and relationships with our pers. It also provides us with the chance to strengthen our mental as well as physical health by allowing opportunities for personal growth and self-expression. Many students get exposed to leisure and recreational activities for the first time when they attend university thus university plays a big role in helping people in early phases of adulthood discover who they are.
Throughout the semester we have learnd that leisure contributes to ones personal growth in different ways across the different aspects of life. This includes the biosocial domain, the cognitive domain as well as the psychosocial domain. If we look at the North-West University we notice that it does offer quit a few recreational activities for students to participate in however they seem slack when it comes to marketing these activities to the "non athletes" who might not be aware of the activities and facilities. The university offers activities such as rock climbing, table tennis, chess, e-sports, dance as well as social events and many more activities for people of all interests. Because of this not many have had the oppertunity to participate in events or make use of the universities facilities for recreational purposes. The facilities offered by universities seem to focus more on the biosocial aspect of development in the sense that it allows students to practice the sport of their choice with there friends and from my personal experience it allowed me to meet new people who like the same sport as i do and help me build new relationships based on that shared interest. The university isn't just sport focused it also provides museums where those who are less active can go to learn more about the university as well as open spaces where you can go play frisbee with your friends or just relax in the sun and talk with your friends.
However if you compare the activities the NWU offer to universities in the US you notice that they offer alot more recreational oppertunities than we do and they also market it better. The university of Miami for example offers sand volleyball, they have a climbing centre, they have thriving football programs as well as alot of other clubs students can participate in. they also have free access to all facillities unlike the nwu where some facilities are reserved for athletes only.
