Stereotype is a term that is used to refer to a widely held but oversimplified idea of a certain type of person or thing . In this blog post , I delve into a journey of reflection upon a stereotypical situation I recently encountered
From 'The danger of a single story' by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie , I can relate to how she encountered a stereotype in the United States where her roommate was so shocked to learn that Adichie could speak English so good and Nigeria happen to have English as its official language. I remember my first day at res and my roommate was so shocked that that I can speak Sesotho fluently cause I am from Potchefstroom...She then told me that they have this idea in their minds that we people from Potchefstroom speak Setswana like people in Rustenburg...I was so surprised cause in the community that I live in back at Potchefstroom we spoke variety of languages .
In conclusion , what I have learnt so far is that stereotypes creates generalization and can lead to discrimination against certain groups of people or certain societies , therefore it is important for one to question him or herself whether his or her thoughts are based on facts or stereotypes .
