Discovering My roots: Important lessons in my culture

In this blog post, I'm sharing two important beliefs from my culture that have really shaped how I think and interact with others. These beliefs have been passed down from my ancestors and are still really important to my community today as a (Tswana woman).

Lesson 1: Ubuntu (We're All Connected)

Ubuntu is a concept from my culture that means "I am because we are." It's all about how we're all connected and how our individual actions affect those around us. Growing up, I saw how this belief brought people together and made us care for each other. It taught me to think about how my actions might impact others and to try to make a positive difference in my community. This belief has really helped me become a more thoughtful and caring person.

Lesson 2: The Power of Stories

Another important belief in my culture is the importance of sharing stories and passing down wisdom from one generation to the next. Our ancestors taught us valuable lessons and shared our history through stories, proverbs, and songs. I loved listening to these stories when I was younger, and they helped me connect with my culture and learn important life lessons. This love for stories has also helped me appreciate different perspectives and understand the world in a deeper way.

Conclusion

These two beliefs from my culture have really shaped who I am today. Ubuntu has taught me about the importance of community and empathy, while the focus on storytelling has helped me appreciate my cultural heritage and understand different viewpoints. These beliefs continue to guide me and help me stay connected to my roots.
