Embracing Diversity: Examining the Impact of Culture on Worldview

I am reminded of the various tapestry of ideas and teachings that have been woven into the fabric of my identity as I consider the multitude of influences that have molded my perspective. I was exposed to a wide range of viewpoints, traditions, and practices while growing up in a multicultural setting, and each of them shaped how I saw the world and how I fit into it. I think the following two lessons/beliefs are ingrained in my cultural heritage.

Celebration of variety: I was raised to value variety and the richness of cultural diversity from an early age. The values of inclusion and accepting people for who they are, regardless of their origin or views, are highly valued in my [insert ethnic group] heritage. The idea that variety should be welcomed and appreciated as it enhances our quality of life and widens our horizons is further supported by this concept. This teaching has given me a profound appreciation for the beauty of diversity and the significance of promoting understanding and mutual respect among all people, whether it is through taking part in multicultural festivals, learning about various religions and customs, or having intercultural conversations.

Value of Harmonious connections: The significance of fostering harmonious connections within the family and the larger community is another fundamental idea that permeates my cultural heritage. Relationships are seen in my cultural setting as the cornerstone of pleasure and well-being, with a focus on communication, empathy, and conflict resolution. This lesson emphasizes how all living things are interrelated and how crucial it is to cultivate empathy and compassion in our relationships with one another. This idea has influenced how I perceive the interconnectedness of human relationships and the value of fostering partnerships based on mutual respect and trust, whether it is by valuing family ties, showing hospitality to strangers, or engaging in forgiveness and reconciliation practices.

The intricacies of cultural effect on perspective become apparent to me when I discuss these lessons with a classmate and consider what seems familiar and unfamiliar. Since I was raised in a multicultural setting that valued inclusion and acceptance, I may find that the celebration of diversity speaks to me strongly. But my classmate could not understand it because they come from a background where diversity is valued less or because they might have faced prejudice because of who they are.

In a similar vein, having grown up in a culture that values interpersonal ties and mutual support, I may see the importance of harmonious partnerships. However, given that my classmate is from a society that emphasizes individualism, it could seem strange to her.
