Emerging adults is a life stage associated with college students. It is the ages of 18 to 25 where the Youth is not yet working but has finished secondary education and has left home. During college, they participate in more leisure activities along with their peers. These leisure activities contribute to their biological, cognitive and psychosocial development. It is during this life stage where emerging adults discover where they want to go in life, where they discover their career paths and where they build better, stronger and committed relationships, all through leisure.
The NWU offers leisure activities such as various sports, arts, drama, music etc. for the students. Becoming part of these activities, however, requires us being part of the "teams" of each of the activities. And for some students, that is not what we want. The majority of the students want to participate without the commitment of having to go every time the activity is taking place. But that free option is not available, thus many students do not participate in the NWU's leisure activities because they do not have the time, transportation or other resources to commit to the activity.
Universities overseas such as Arizona State University, University of North Texas and Stanford University, offers many leisure programs to their students. Most of those activities does require the students to be part of the teams, such as the athletic programs, but others are open to willing participation from any and every student. Instead of having a scheduled leisure program, they have sign-up sheets where students can sign-up to participate in the activity. They advertise these activities through social media as well as posters around the campus, an university newsletter also mentions and elaborates on the planned activities as well as describing how successful the previous activities were.
Willing participation allows students to decide if they can and want to participate. If they decide to join in, they get the chance to participate along-side other students who have more or less the same situations as them of wanting to participate in leisure activities, but not wanting the commitment of a team. These activities are also more driven by enjoyment, fun and to experience flow. Thus, the students enjoy these leisure activities more and form stronger bonds with those involved. Forming stronger, more mature relationships is part of an Emerging adult's experiences. Participating willingly in activities allows them to get to know others with similar interests. Getting to know others leads to friendships that can grow stronger. Some might even find a more committed, romantic relationship during these programs.
Meeting new people and getting along with them, provides students with more friends to invite to other gatherings such as having lunch or going to a party, as students does. This leads to long-lasting friendships that provides the individual with a healthy well-being. These are also the individuals who show immense growth in their identity development. Those that do not participate in leisure activities, do not really form bonds with other students except for the casual "class buddy". These individuals usually experience loneliness, self-awareness and a low well-being.
In conclusion, despite the various activities presented at the NWU for the students, I believe it is best to allow open leisure opportunities where students can freely decide to join. Some of them might find they have a talent and decide to join a more formal team, while others just go for the social interactions and the chance to experience enjoyment and fun.
Emerging adulthood is a period of development between ages of 18 and 35, it is a phase of lifespan between adolescence and adulthood, a period of time to explore possibilities and self identity. The age of feeling in between and the age of instability.
