In this study guide you will find the study material necessary for this module.  Complete all assignments for self-study thoroughly and make sure that you reach all the outcomes, since this module forms the basis for the modules following it.

Hierdie is ‘n verpligte module vir studente wat ingeskryf is vir die program: Fisiese Wetenskappe vir Onderwys.  Dit sal hulle toerus met kennis en vaardighede om die Lewe en Lewende Dinge-komponent van Natuurwetenskappe aan te bied.  As ‘n onderwyser met ‘n kwalifikasie om Fisiese Wetenskappe aan te bied, mag jy ook gevra word om Natuurwetenskappe in die Senior Fase aan te bied (grad 8 en 9).

Natuurwetenskappe bestaan uit die volgende kennisarea’s:

• Lewe en Lewende Dinge (Lewenswetenskappe / Biologie)
• Materie en Materiale (Chemie)
• Energie en Verandering (Fisika)
• Planeet Aarde en die Ruimte (Geografie)

Om die gaping wat daar in jou huidige omvang van kennis in Lewenswetenskappe mag wees, aan te spreek, word hierdie module aangebied.  Dieselfde geld vir die Planeet Aarde en die Ruimte component waar jy in die tweede studiejaar die module NSSP 211 gaan afhandel.

NSPP 111 sal jou toerus met vakkennis en jy sal blootstelling kry aan onderrig metodologie en vaardighede om die Lewe en Lewende Dinge-komponent suksesvol te kan onderrig.  Hierdie module bied ook die geleentheid om praktiese vaardighede in sekere aspekte van die inhoud soos sitologie, menslike anatomie en plantfisiologie te ontwikkel.

This is a compulsory module for students in the program: Physical Sciences for Education.  It will equip them with knowledge and skills to teach the Life and Living component of Natural Sciences.  As a qualified Physical Sciences teacher you may be asked to teach Natural Sciences in the Senior Phase (grade 8 and 9). 

Natural Sciences consist of four different strands namely:

• Life and Living (Life Sciences / Biology)
• Matter and Material (Chemistry);
• Energy and Change (Physics) and
• Earth and Beyond (Geography)

To address the gap that might be present in your knowledge repertoire in Life and Living, this module is offered.  The same will apply for the Earth and Beyond component, where you will complete the module NSSP 211 in your second year of study.

NSSP 111 will equip you with subject knowledge and you will be exposed to teaching methodology and skills to successfully teach the Life and Living component.  This module will also provide the opportunity to develop practical skills regarding certain aspects of the content such as cytology, human anatomy and of plant physiology.
