Music game OR body percussion OR virtual performance

Due date: 17 October

Please note that you can choose between four (4) options for this assignment.

Group assignment total: 50 marks

Contribution to module mark: 15%

Option 1 – Music game

In your groups, design a music game that will be suitable for Grade 3. The game that you design must focus on any music concept/s or characteristics. You need to design the game as well as any props needed to successfully play the game (i.e. board game, flashcards, quiz cards, etc.). You are required to submit clear instructions for your game as well as electronic versions (designs) for your props. The game must encourage players to engage in authentic music experiences which implies that you might need to include a playlist or specific songs as part of your game (you can add only the song names and artists or links to the songs). Learners must further be encouraged to be actively engaged when playing the game through active listening, collaboration with peers, movement, etc.

Opsie 1 – Musiekspeletjie

Option 2 – Virtual music game

In your groups, design a virtual music game that will be suitable for Grade 3. The game that you design must focus on any music concept/s or characteristics. Your game must be suitable for playing online (virtually). Please note that you cannot merely design a Kahoot! game with questions and answers for this assignment. Your game must encourage learners to be actively engaged in authentic music experiences. Please include clear instructions for your game as well as all audio and visual material that will be necessary to successfully play the game.

Opsie 2 – Virtuele musiekspeletjie

Ontwerp, in groepe, ’n virtuele musiekspeletjie vir Graad 3.

Option 3 – Body percussion

In your groups, design a body percussion activity suitable for Grade 3. Your activity must include graphic (iconic) notation designed for a specific song. Please note that you also need to submit a video where you perform the body percussion activity to show your understanding of interpreting graphic notation (remember that you must first determine whether the song you chose has beats grouped in 3 or 4 and to then accordingly design the body percussion activity and graphic notation). You need to include at least two different patterns.

Opsie 3 – Liggaamsperkussie

U moet minstens twee verskillende patrone insluit.

Option 4 – Performance using found instruments

In your groups, make a virtual performance using found instruments – you can submit a 1-2 minute (at least) recording of your performance. The following can be used to guide your planning process:

  1. Choose a song (any song that you like, it does not have to be suitable for the foundation phase).

  1. Each group member identifies an object at home which can be used as an instrument.

  1. Decide which part of the song you want to perform to. Each group member creates a pattern (rhythm) which can serve as accompaniment to the song – it is important that one of the group members keeps the beat (at least at times) of the song while others play various patterns to the song. Two group members can work together to play the same pattern, but you have to have at least three different patterns in your group.

  1. Also think about whether all the instruments will be playing the entire time or in certain combinations – two or more group members have to play together for the most part, only solo performances will not be allowed.

Tip: If you perform to the verse and chorus of the song, have different patterns for each; when the music or the feel of the song changes, change your patterns, add/remove instruments.

  1. Group members make recordings of themselves playing to the song and you combine the various videos for your final virtual performance. Remember that the videos will combine easier if you listen to the song using headphones and only record yourself playing to the song. This will help to avoid the various recorded versions of the song you chose effecting the quality of the sound of your final video – when combining, you will therefore add the recordings of yourselves to the original version of the song.
