We wish you a very warm welcome to this your second module in the study of Economics. ECOE 122 is a 12-credit module, which implies that you require approximately 120 hours (including study time, preparation for contact sessions, assignments and the exanimation, etc) to complete this module successfully. I trust that, apart from the self-enrichment that this course will offer you, it will also equip you with the necessary skills to bring about changes in the teaching environment and subject (aimed at providing a more entrepreneur-orientated education to learners) in order for you to fulfil your calling as educator. The aim of this module is to build on your macro-economic knowledge by focusing on the National Accounts, as well as your micro-economic knowledge by looking closely at price formation and the interaction between demand and supply. In this module you will also be introduced to Economics Methodology, and more specifically skills to teach Economics as a subject. You will build on your ECOE 112 knowledge regarding the CAPS for Economics, lesson planning and preparation and be given the opportunity to present a lesson. In this module we will also look at the integration of ICT in teaching Economics.

Economics is part of your daily life and the functioning of the country. Basic economic knowledge puts you in a better position to make well-informed decisions concerning your needs and the satisfaction of these needs. Your economic knowledge may also contribute towards establishing a better South Africa. The knowledge that you acquire during your studies will enable you to teach the learners in school about the economy and that they are also able to make a contribution to the South African economy. In order for you to be successful in this module it is important that you firstly, make a thorough study of the theoretical knowledge regarding the learning content and secondly, that you apply this theoretical knowledge in practice. After completion of this module you should be an effective, capable and accurate reader, writer and speaker of the English language, focusing on specific Economics vocabulary. You must be able to function effectively within our multilingual community. This module is closely linked to the other modules in the programme, as it improves your ability to formulate your assignments and examination answers. Failure to acquire these skills may handicap your chances of becoming a teacher.
