Rail Transport Studies is a 2nd Year level module and aims enable candidates to:
- Understand the historical development of rail transport in South Africa.
- Instil a competent familiarity with South African rail transport parastals, regulators, relevant policy, management, organisations and operations.
- Understand the role of rail transport in the economy as a monopoly and a, potentially, oligopolistic market.
- Understand the factors which fully determine rail/road competition.
- Select appropriate methods for tariff setting and costing rail services.
- Understand the legislative and economic framework for rail franchising or concessioning locally and internationally.
- Develop basic competencies in understanding “safety” in the rail industry.
