Rail Transport Studies is a 2nd Year level module and aims enable candidates to:

  • Understand the historical development of rail transport in South Africa.
  • Instil a competent familiarity with South African rail transport parastals, regulators, relevant policy, management, organisations and operations.
  • Understand the role of rail transport in the economy as a monopoly and a, potentially, oligopolistic market.
  • Understand the factors which fully determine rail/road competition.
  • Select appropriate methods for tariff setting and costing rail services.
  • Understand the legislative and economic framework for rail franchising or concessioning locally and internationally.
  • Develop basic competencies in understanding “safety” in the rail industry.
