KCOM 111

INTRODUCTION TO MASS COMMUNICATION

Welcome to KCOM111. This module is presented by Dr Mooki Lobelo

Why study mass media?

This module lays the foundation for studying mass communication, which is an essential component of the BA degree with communication subjects and other communication degrees. Once you have completed this module, you should have a good idea of the world of mass media practitioners, how mass communication developed, what the unique nature and scope of mass communication are; which important theories help to give us an understanding of the phenomenon of mass communication; why we should have a critical mindset toward mass media; and how transformation has occurred in the South African mass communication industry over the past twenty years. You will also study the phenomenal effects of digital technology on the mass media and how to adapt to these changes.

The contents of this module are the building blocks for your future studies in modules such as Journalism, Design, Development Communication, and Corporate Communication Management.
