Welcome to the module Historical and Political Context of Education in South Africa.
Purpose of the module:
You are currently equipping yourself with knowledge so as to function as a professional teacher within the South African education system. A teacher does not function in isolation in his/her classroom, but within and as part of a school and a national education system, which he/she should know thoroughly and understand. The national education system does not have an incidental structure – it developed its present structure during the course of a long history within a particular societal and political context. The aim of this module is to introduce you to this context and to the trajectory of historical evolution.
Description of the content of the module:
Within the context of reflective and analytic thought, collaboration between people within the understanding of unity in diversity, which contributes to the development of a just society, the content of this Programme focuses on the following:
• the manner in which history and politics influence social change and the nature of education provisioning;
• the development of a 21st-century learning community within the context of the history of education in Africa;
• the development of a 21st-century learning community within the context of the history of education in South Africa;
• the diverse history of political influences on African education; and
• the diverse history of political influences on South African education.
