Welcome to PHIL213: Ethical Perspectives.

In this module, we are going to reflect on the nature of people’s ethical behaviour. The texts we are going to study were selected either because very well-known philosophers wrote them or because they reflect current dialogues in the world. Therefore, you will be introduced to some of the most influential ideas that have shaped modern ethics and continue to influence how people determine what is right and what is wrong. You will also get the opportunity to see how these theories are applied in the world today by investigating ethical dilemmas

We will reflect on ethics in a philosophical manner. This will entail an overview of the variety of ethical theories available in the field of philosophy and the attitudes one can adopt toward these theories. But we will also go further: we are going to attempt to track down the presuppositions (that are often not even articulated) that fundamentally influence our views on how ethical behaviour should be determined.

SOME ARRANGEMENTS:

Here are some practical things to consider. Due to Covid-19 and resulting safety regulations, the decision has been made to move this module online entirely. This means that all content will be provided on eFundi

There will be two lecturers for this module: Mx. Aïda Terblanché-Greeff and myself (Mx. Nonhlanhla Mazibuko). I am based at the NWU Vanderbijl Campus, and all communication from students registered at the Vanderbijl campus should be directed at me. You are welcome to contact me via email with any enquiries or problems regarding the module or any material covered in this module. However, please look at the following blog post for some etiquette when contacting your lecturer: How to Email Your Professor (without being annoying AF)

Best of luck for this semester.
