Good day student, and welcome to your SSCE321 [Social Sciences (History) in Education] module site!

My name is Mr Marthinus JD Buys (Johan) and I will be your lecturer for the module. I am looking forward to a busy, but terrific semester with you.

I want to welcome everyone, and I will like to encourage you to post a short informal hello message in the ‘Introduction’ SSCE321 [Social Sciences (History) in Education] forum (discussions) to let me know you received my welcome message, and to briefly introduce yourself to your fellow students.

Although the official start date for the semester is not until 17/07/2023, all students (who have officially registered) now have access to the SSCE321 [Social Sciences (History) in Education] module site, so feel free to start exploring our online teaching, learning, and assessment environment. All details of the module can be found within the online module site, syllabus, calendar, announcements, resources, discussions, assignments, tests & quizzes, dropbox, and gradebook. If any details appear not to be in place it is under construction and will soon be made available to you to explore and work through assisting you in your development within the context of the SSCE321 [Social Sciences (History) in Education] context. I also want to take a moment to post a couple of points as we get started.

This module will have regular weekly preparation, exercises, recordings, slides, class etc. depending on the mode of delivery which will be explained via WhatsApp at the start of the semester. This is not a self-paced module – it is important that you keep on top of the weekly preparation, exercises, recordings, slides etc. to avoid consequences that might lead to unwanted results.

Each of you must manage your own time in general each week to know when assessments (assignments), and any other weekly module obligations are due. This will involve regularly logging into eFundi to check for updates and uploaded information to the module site.

At this point, I suggest the following actions from your side:

  • Familiarise yourself with the eFundi Learning Management System (LMS) and the SSCE321 [Social Sciences (History) in Education] module site.
  • Make sure you are on the SSCE321 [Social Sciences (History) in Education] WhatsApp group so you can receive extra communication regarding the module. (See announcements for more information).
  • Check out your semester planning and assessments document so you can further organise your semester accordingly. (See resources for more information).
  • Submit your first participation activity yourself in the discussions tab by writing an informal hello message and introducing yourself to your fellow students. (See discussions for more information).
  • Read through the lessons so you know the rhythm of the module, and what is expected of you. (See SSCE321 (Afr) / SSCE321 (Eng) for more information).

As you get started, I am happy to answer any questions that may arise, or point you in the right direction were you will be able to find the needed information or support. Please post your specific questions about the class in the ‘Getting Started’ SSCE321 [Social Sciences (History) in Education] forum (discussions). I will send a Class 01 announcement on 14/08/2023, the official semester classes starting date.

I look forward to working with you this semester and getting off to a strong and positive start!

Kind Regards,

Johan
