Comrades Marathon 2026: We look forward to celebrating your milestones

Dear NWU community

As the NWU family prepares to support participants in the 2026 Comrades Marathon on Sunday, 14 June, I extend best wishes to all the staff members, students, alumni and friends of the NWU who will be taking part in this iconic race from Durban to Pietermaritzburg.

The Comrades Marathon is more than a test of physical endurance. It is a demonstration of determination, discipline, resilience and commitment - qualities that are also central to the values of our university. Every participant who takes on this challenge carries with them a story of preparation, sacrifice and perseverance.

We are particularly proud of the many members of the NWU family who will be on the starting line, including our well-known staff member and three-time Comrades Marathon champion, Tete Dijana. His achievements continue to inspire athletes across South Africa and serve as a reminder of what can be accomplished through hard work and dedication.

Whether you are competing for a podium finish, striving for a personal best, or simply aiming to cross the finish line, you represent the spirit of excellence that defines the NWU. Your participation reflects our commitment towards a holistic development and the pursuit of goals beyond the classroom, laboratory, office, and sports field.

I call on the entire NWU community to rally behind our athletes throughout the weekend. Let us celebrate their courage, encourage their efforts, and acknowledge the countless hours of training that have brought them to this moment. Their success is a source of pride to us all.

On behalf of the NWU leadership, management, and the broader NWU family, I wish every NWU participant a safe and successful race. May you find strength in every kilometre, confidence in your preparation, and pride in your achievement. We stand with you and look forward to celebrating your accomplishments.

Best wishes
