Important information: Access and adherence to rules on campuses

Dear student,

Please take note of the following important information regarding access to NWU premises and roads:

Access to campus:

  • All NWU campuses, grounds, buildings, and facilities are considered public premises under the law.
  • Entry is controlled and may require approval by Protection Services, contracted security, or electronic access systems.

Identification:

  • Everyone on campus must carry proof of identification (e.g., NWU student/staff card or official ID).
  • You may be asked to show your ID at any time by an authorised official.

Prohibited/dangerous items:

You must declare any dangerous goods or weapons in your possession or control. All campuses are firearm-free zones.

Prohibited substances:

No prohibited or illegal substances are allowed on campuses, including private spaces such as residences or any public spaces.

Searches:

Authorised officials may conduct reasonable searches of persons, vehicles, bicycles, motorcycles, or belongings when entering or while on NWU property.

Entry conditions:

You may be denied entry or asked to leave campus if you refuse to:

  • show identification,
  • allow a reasonable search, or
  • comply with access control conditions.

Road rules on campus:

  • All roads on NWU premises are regarded as public roads in terms of the National Road Traffic Act.
  • This means that the normal rules of the road (speed limits, traffic signs, and driving regulations) apply on campus.

We request all students and staff to please cooperate and comply with these measures to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our entire university community.
