I would love to believe that in most ethnic groups there is a belief or teaching of a traditional doctor or healers, however the Basotho group refers to the traditional doctor as "Ngaka". The belief in traditional doctors have influence in my daily life, particularly in the herbs that help and fight against sicknesses. A traditional doctor is a person who have a great knowledge and skills about herbs, with basotho group being an "ngaka" depends on the belief, knowledge and experiences of indigenous aspects. With Basotho group for example whenever an individual have flu, mint as a plant is prescribed not consulting with a medical doctor or drinking medicine, if a person is very sick "ngaka" can help. This teaching of traditional doctors and healers had worked for me as an individual.
As C. Ross (1996) gives out and explains an example of transformation of values of exchange and reciprocity. I am going to reflect on the networks that I move through everyday and how and what I exchange through them. I will focus on exchange (giving, receiving and return) as I elaborate further on how the social, economic, and cultural capitals play a role in exchange and reciprocity.
In 2023 I a gap year student and because I did not want to just sit and do nothing, I went to stay with my aunt and I offered to help her daughter whi was doing grade 7 with all the difficult school work. It was because of what I know and skills I attained that she had to trust and believe I will help her daughter progress to the next grade and we refer to this as cultural capital. It was impossible for her to reciprocate as this is a generalized exchange and reciprocity.
As for the social capital involved, my aunt would always hand out my CV to the managers she knows and those she have worked under. At times when my aunt's daughter is given school projects that requires some building or constructing I would contact my high school friend who was doing engineering to help out. I refer to this as a long term obligation that involves non kin as I also help out my friend's siblings whenever they need assistance with history because I am good at theory.
The economic capital refers to having access to money, in my case because my aunt had a stable job and was so kind ton acknowledge that i had needs and wants, whenever she had money, she would give me at least something. I never had to pay back my aunt because it was a generalized exchange and reciprocity that involves kin.
Ritual observation can be referred to as taking part and being present in activities and events that are prescribed to happen in a specific way for a society.
My day started unusual for me as I received a call from one of my friends telling me to refresh and make way to town.Normally I wake up,prepare outfit, then take a bath, get dressed and prepare food but that day I had to only take a bath.In no time I met my friends and we were purchasing the rest of the things we needed to attend a massive music festival in my home town(Welkom) in Free State the Matjhabeng Summer Blow.I refer to this as my rite of separation.
By the time me and my friends separated,I passed by my workplace to check on my colleagues as it was my day off. After that I headed back to prepare to make way to the music festival.Everything was well organized. As we waited for transportation, you would say it was new year's eve.
Minutes later the driver arrived,we took a couple of drinks along the way so by the time we arrived at the music fest, one would say we have been there for hours because we were already socializing and having so much fun.Dancing and having chats with strangers I was completely a different person that's why I refer to that period of time my liminal phase.
At least at 2:00 AM the event was nearly over, one of my favorite artist was about to perform, but it didn't matter because our driver was there to take us back home.As I arrived at home I had to sleep, although my heart was still at groove. The following day everything was back to normal, like nothing happened all I had was memories.I refer to this as rite of reincorporation.
Stereotype is an often unfair and untrue belief that many people have about certain group of people or things. Our own assumptions and stereotypes can cause othering meaning create differences.
I once had this stereotypic idea that science students are more intelligent and more important than any other students.Representation played an important part in this stereotype of science chosen being superior.People think humanities is chosen by people who are less laborious, who are not studious and are not serious about their careers. While they say science is very studious, very difficult and is chosen by only good students those who are serious unlike humanities ones. However the stereotype is not accurate and in this manner it creates othering between science and other studies. While really the sciences and humanities might work together by using history from anthropologists or historians and scientific research from scientists to study human behavior.
Humanities is an eye opener to me.I am starting to let go of stereotypes and I am observing society, people around me,problems they face, how they live and lived before.I have attained some practical knowledge as it is a living subject.
According to me no stream is less or more than other stream.People should stop with this stereotype and being biased and we must not let out own assumptions create differences.
