IAM feeling so excited because the week has finally ended at last, I could rest myself. As this has been a very long week for me due to the load of work I had. Data and loadshedding are the main components that have inhibited my studies this week. I have been struggling with data and this has made me to lose some of my online classes I couldn't attend them this made me to fall behind with my studies and also the loadshedding that occurred repeatedly in our area made to lose out some of the important work I had to postpone my work as my batteries were low and I could not study in the darkness.
I have learnt that music plays an important role in the development of foundation phase learners. Through music can foster relationship and interactions with each other. Another point is that music promote the physical development of the foundation phase learners.the most important concepts for me were the learning theories which is Erikson's stages of psychosocial development, Piaget's cognitive development theory and vygotsky and the zone of proximal development. All these theories talk about the children's growth and how they interact with their surrounding world in order for them to learn and gain knowledge.
The intergration of music in the foundation phase increases the learners ability and also when the learners take part in music by singing songs , clapping their hands , moving around their physical development grows . However music can also help to retain the learners memories as they are able to remember important words as they sing. I would choose incorporating music education because it develops the physical development of learners , music helps to expand the learners vocabulary by learning new words. Another point is that when the learners engage in music activities their academic achievement will be improved ad music education promotes higher- order thinking skills, logical and abstract thinking and internalisation of knowledge.
1 in your opinion on and the synthesising all that you learnt in lskm 221, what are the most important aspects to keep in mind when planning foundation phase lessonslesson
when the teacher is planning a foundation phase lessons he / she must ensure that there is always music at the beginning and at the end of the lesson. The teacher should identify and set clear goals and objectives that he or she wants her learner's to achieve at the end of the lesson.
Know who your learners are , their ability levels, interest , prior knowledge and learning preferences.list the materials and resources that Will be needed for the lesson to be successful.describe ways in which you will provide opportunities for your learners to practice what you want them to learn
2. What is your opinion about the value of utilising arts intergration and play in foundation phase lesson.
Intergrating arts into lessons builds social and emotional skills. Teaching through the arts , encourage active play, which provides many benefits like learning to express and identify emotions , gaining confidence and forming strong relationships.
In the beginning of the semester I have learnt a lot from this module . However I have also developed a positive attitude towards my studies and read hard so that I may be able to understand the concepts of this module much better. I did my level best to ensure that I master all the concepts that we were taught by our lecture.
Through reflections I was able to deepen my understanding about the topic of music education while consulting different sources and opinions. I have learnt from other people's experiences and skills about how music can be intergrated into education in order to make it a success.
The Assignment were very challenging at some point I once wrote an assignment which I did not understand at first and ended up failing it , However we were given a second chance to rewrite that's when I thoroughly re read through the Assignment and did exactly what was required of me it was much better than before.
Individual reflection were successful because in order for us to understand the concepts of music we must be able to reflect on our weaknesses and strength about this module. However reflections helps us to measure our understanding and helps us to correct where we have made mistakes.
In this module what I have found interesting is that the lecture used different media platforms in order to engage with us the students. He encouraged us to participate in the lessons and provided us with enough materials for learning. We were always given a chance to ask questions and received feedback on time. We participated in groupworks which helped us to learn about different skills and experiences about music that we can apply in our teaching practices.
The main challenges I experienced in this module was self studying ,lack of enough time to complete my assignment , and lack of internet connection as I sometimes struggled to attend some of my classes.
Arts intergration is an approach to education in which lessons are taught and assesed throughout naturally aligned art concepts , students are given an opportunity to construct and demonstrate understanding through art forms that readily align themselves to the given objectives.
Arts intergration is important for the following reasons:
Working in the arts helps learner's to develop creative problem solving skills
Teaching through arts can present difficult concepts visually, making them more easy to understand.
arts instruction helps children with the development of motor skills , language skills and social skills.
visual arts teach learner's about colour, layout , perspective and balance all techniques that are necessary in presentation of academic works.
arts experiences boost critical thinking, teaching students to take time to be more careful and thorough in how they observe the world.
Benefits of art intergration in foundation phase:.
motor skills: many of the motions involved in making art such as holding a paintbrush or scribbling with a crayon are essential to the growth of fine motor skills in young children.
Language development: for every young children , making art or just talking about it provides opportunities to learn words for colours, shapes and actions . In foundation phase children can use descriptive words to discuss their own creations.
Decision making: art education strengthens problem solving and critical thinking skills. The experience of making decisions and choices when creating a piece of art carries over into other parts of life.
visual learning: Drawing , sculpting with clay and threading beads on a string all develop visual spatial skills, which are more important than ever.
improved academic performance: young children who participate more regularly in the arts are four times more likely to be recognised for academic achievement.
Music ignites all areas of child development and skills for school readiness , including intellectual, social, emotional, motor, language and overall literacy . It helps the body and the mind to work together. Dancing to music helps children build motor skills while allowing them to practice self expression.
Music builds overall brain development and creates pathways in the brain that improve a child's cognitive functioning.
Songs and rhymes greatly expand a child's vocabulary as well as their ability to use language correctly. The repitition in popular rhymes and songs helps children to memorise new words. They also become familiar with language patterns and how words are placed together.
Children must be able to hear various sounds, distinguish them from each other, they must also be able to read and spell words. Teaching children rhymes and songs is one of the best ways to develop their auditory perceptual skills.
Motor skills are extremely important for learning to read and write . They are developed through the following examples of music activities.
Finger plays
Playing with instruments
Making instruments
In music , children use languages , perceptual and auditory skills to match sounds , beats ,pitches and speed or tempo everytime they sing a song. Children learn about the basic structure of maths by seeing the relationship between things , for example matching things that are the same or equal is a basic maths concept.
Music can be intergrated with reading and mathematics. Using concrete music instruction might be a way for learners to enjoy the lesson and also apply the skills that are being taught.
Music and mathematics are closely related subjects when they use identical concepts and skills , for example , patterns are found in music , such as demonstration of beat and rhythm , however it is also found in mathematics when learning about number systems or considering patterns of pictures and shapes.
Music can be applied to learning the skills needed in mathematics. Some learner's are able to remember songs better than spoken words . Using songs and different music concepts can also help to teach mathematics because of the high correlation between learning music and spatial temporal reasoning skills. Learner's who study music at an early age have better spatial temporal reasoning skills
Using music allow learner's to put a voice in math so that they do not only see maths but hear maths concepts being sung or played in an instrument. They are more actively in learning as opposed to passively listening.
There are many mnemonic devices that employ music to teach mathematical facts such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
Hi everyone my name is Lydia NYELELA . IAM from Klerksdorp in a location called Jouberton. The reason I chose to become a foundation phase teacher is because I love working with young children and also I want to help to groom them and make a difference in their lives.iam very passionate about working with different people and also helping other people. What I expect from this module is that our lecture and sis will provide us with the opportunity to learn and understand the concepts of holistic development (music) which is study unit 1 , I want to learn more about this topic so that I can be able to widen my knowledge.
