The year is now coming to an end, at it was quite a busy semester but we have made it this far.
I learned so many interesting things in LSKM about music incorporation into lesson plans and the important role that music have in a class room, somethings I must honestly say, I haven't though it had the role that it have.
LSKM changed my meaning about the importance of music in a classroom because before the start of this semester I haven't given much thought on including music into a lesson I am giving. I know that in English and Maths songs can be very handy to learn on a new concept as it keeps children's attention.
I feel that all the info in this module was very helpful I that is way I feel that I wouldn't change anything learned in this module and was there no information given that wasn't helpful.
Because of this module I will definitely give more attention to using music in my class one day or even when doing practical lessons.
It is just one of those week that feels like you don't know if you come and go, just have to much on your plate and don't know what to do and where to begin and life just feel like a huge mountain to climb.
As I got the time together to work through study unit it learned me a lot of interesting things.
I believe that music and art assessment in the foundation phase is being neglected in foundation phase because a lot of teachers and school doesn't see it as a mandatory subjects like math and languages.
The don't give to much attention to things because they will rather use the time on all the other important subjects.
Music and art is in my opinion an important developmental subject for learners and must it be implemented better and taught more in school as it lets learners express their feelings through their art and can they sometimes get feelings out of their systems that they wouldn't otherwise.
I was just one of those days with a lot of changes and obstacles in the way to overcome. One of those days that everything small thing wants to make you cry and you don't know why and misses all your loved ones.
I read in our study unit 4 that some people may say that art integration is a waste of time in Foundation Phase education, but I don't agree with this. I believe that the integration of art in the foundation phase plays a big role in the development of children's imagination and their way of looking at things. Children needs to be creative, for most of them it is a way to express emtions or feelings they can't express with words. Art helps children to expirement and learn new things sometimes about themselves and how they view certain things.
As I continued further on through the study unit I was interesting to learn about the arts integration theory. It was very insightful for me to learn about all the different parts about this theory. Especially about the ways you can combine mathematics with art integration. I also loved to have read through the ideas for art integration. It gave me some ideas to work on when I have my own class one day.
The activities that we had to compile at the end of the study unit was quite challenging for me, even though the ideas was well put together and gave me good ideas to work on, was it still not so easy to compile my own activities and did it take quite a few creative brainstormings and research to be able to compile a fun, but learningfull, activities.
The days have been quite busy the last while and we don't get around to everything you hoped. I must say that I sometimes struggle to find a balance between my work and studying but I love the experience and wouldn't change a thing.
This week I went through SU 3 blog information and this is what I learned:
The music activities/games was fun for most of the learners but I think that it made some of them uncomfortable because they don't know the language and think the other children will laugh at them, the same with the dancing before the whole class especially the other gender as not everyone is comfortable in their own skin. Gather the kids input about what they like to do to be able to better plan activities. We have a lot of schools with diverse learners and I feel that they must learn a bit about all the different cultures of all their classmates. First practise and learn song of different cultures in the class to the kids, make it fun and interesting for the learners to want to learn it. Don't expect learners to understand a song in another language as their home language very quickly, oractise it for a few days before combining it into a activity.
The past we days has been quite a rolercoaster ride, but here we still are.
I must say I din't but as much into my studies as I would have liked but under circumstances it is understandable.
This week we looked more into Study Unit 2.
It was intressting to learn that music lessons offers inclusive education goals.
I also like to learn about all the different elements that are used in a music lesson and what each of them means. It was also very insightful to look at all the ideas to incorporate music into a lesson.
I would include contemporary commercial music into my lessons as I feel the children will assocaite better with this type of music as It is something they hear everyday.
I feel that all the examples we have been provided with is inclusive as it is lesson that includes the music concepts that a music lesson should have and it is also fun and inviting for the lessons and will this for this reasons be affective lessons to use in a class environment.
For the reason mention above don't I feel much must be changed to make the lesson more inclusive but I would suggest the following changes:
I feel some of the songs used for the lessons is to repeative and can songs with more elements/letter be used.
More movement or the use of instruments can be used in the lessons.
Study Unit 2 was for me an very insightful learning experience and did I enjoy it a lot to learn more about all the ways to incorporate music into a lesson.
My name is Carina Pieters and I'm 23 years old, turning 24 later this year.
I am an intern at a Primary School and I am loving every minute of it and we learn so much from all the teachers.
I have not been able to put as much in my studies this week as I would have liked as it has been a busy week and the week following will be just as busy so I hope to be able to fit in some study time.
From SU1 I loved learning about all the different stages in the development of a child and how early in their lives they make associations with music and what a important rule it plays in their development.
The way that children can identify different emotions through music was very interesting for me and I hope to be able to pay more attention on this one day in my class.
I also found it interesting that we can't understand a child's learning needs and development without taking their socials environment and social factors that have an influence on in into consideration. I hope I will be able to see and understand all these influence and pay more individual attention regarding this on my learners and adapt accordingly.
