STUDY UNIT 5

Hello everyone

The study unit 5 is about the importance of assessing, performing art in the f/p, and it is often neglected, there is a reason behind the negligence.

  • Lack of teacher’s knowledge of assessment or even art.
  • Lack of teacher’s content knowledge or even curriculum as a whole.
  • Some teacher’s do not even realise the variety of assessment tool or its importance.

This study educate us as student teacher about the variety of activities like singing, moving, drawing, listening, performing , and also  how we as teachers  can accommodate the various learning styles that will meet the needs and abilities and also interest of these different learners. Assessment it must be included in lesson planning every time educator make plan, educator must state the objectives of the lesson for example "what do I want my learners know or learn and be able to do by the activity". What are the outcome of the lesson. P

Assessment  can help us to use different pedagogies and provide more learning opportunity. Make sure that we provide enough sense of the new concepts and also skills, before giving answers or explanation to new ideas. Ask open question to develop critical thinking. Use learner centred method and also access prior knowledge. Select the suitable assessment tool according to developmental appropriate of the learners.

Again this study unit remind us as student teachers to continuous reflect on their learner’s link lesson content to real life situation and also world around and encourage us to peers scaffolding.assessment is even integral to all aspects of curriculum, it help we as teachers to gather the information about different learners, identify and support them according to their needs. In foundation phase we also have two types of assement  and each type have its own purpose for example formative assessment and summative assessment. This two methods of assessment have different purposes to diagnose learners needs as well.when reading CAPS document it describes the principles of assessment and even explain it thoroughly for example.

Continuous  assessment - is used to identify, gather or evaluate learners performance to enhance learning.

Informal assessment - is the assessment taking place daily during different routines it is even done or recorded an observation book.

Formal assessment - it happened per task per term and even includes activities of all areas. Lastly I can talk about the different types of assessment methods like observation, test, and many others.

STUDY GUIDE 3

Hello everyone

I have been working a lot doing many tests and assignment this week. I am glad and grateful for the opportunities and privileges to be able to study great module LSKM make me as student teacher be able to make learning conducive and effective through music and play.

I gained knowledge and understanding the value of art, purpose and also importance play has on each individual and that it must also be implemented in foundation phase classroom.

Integration encourages collaboration, group, and teamwork activities boost self-esteem through acting, modelling and dramatization.

As professional educator you can encourage learners to know each other by working in small groups, learners will be able to know or understand others cultures value and also believes, these integration can influence learners to know each other better and understand multilingualism or even bilingualism as well.

Every learner will feel safe around each other and not undermine others cultures and believes.

Art integration in foundation phase

The value of art integration in foundation phase learners is essential. Most of the time educator need to engage learners help or encourage them to manipulate art in every learning area. Learners must be encouraged to demonstrate their understanding through art. Art can even meet the needs of every learner and be developmental appropriate.

Through art the learners can develop the problem solving skill, cognitive skill in higher level and also exposed the creativity of the learners. It help learners to be developed holistically and make them school ready and make learning environment conducive as well. Introducing art in foundation phase learners is still part of curriculum. It can also help learners to develop their understanding and apply the knowledge and skills as well.

Art can be integrated in literacy area by reading skills, or even writing skills. Sometime educator when planning integrate in mathematics like singing counting song forward or backward. Singing song during routine exchange to make learners aware it is time to exchange the activity.

Music in foundation phase learners make learning environment very conducive, fun, interesting and also inspiring learners as they always learn through play making activity kinaesthetically and effective at the same time.

In conclusion art can also change and improve live of many learners support them and make their dream come true in creating permanent jobs, and even gave them opportunity to explore the world around the world through art.

TOPIC 1

What is the purpose of music education?

Music education requires learners to recognize and repeat pitch, tone or enunciation of words. Especially in young children, music directly benefits the ability to learn words, speak them correctly, and process the many new sounds they hear from others. Music education involves a high level of memorization.19 Jun 2018

Why is music important in the Foundation Phase?

Music ignites all areas of child development and skills for school readiness, including intellectual, social-emotional, motor, language, and overall literacy. It helps the body and the mind work together. Dancing to music helps children build motor skills while allowing them to practice self-expression.15 Apr 2021

What are the benefits of including music in early childhood education?

Listening to and creating music helps children learn numeracy, literacy and emotional skills. Incorporating music into routines and play in the early years has a positive influence on your child's early development. It can get them moving, thinking and inspire creativity.30 Oct 2020

TOPIC 2

Musical influence to our cultural diversity

Musicians are known to express themselves through song and melody to convey how they're feeling in life, which allows listeners to relate and find comfort in the music. Music prompts people in every culture around the world to dance and express how they feel with movement.11 Jan 2017

Music has the power to culturally, morally, and emotionally influence our society. Thus, the more intentional we become with the sounds, messages, and moods we create and release through our music, the more powerful we will become in making deep positive impacts.24 Aug 2015

TOPIC 3

Fond memories

  • It was really engaging our teacher was part of us, she was us, from the beginning to the end of the period we could sing during religious education praising the Lord in all ways. During mathematics we could integrate the numbers by singing showing four fingers when we count number 4. During Health education we integrate 1, 2 buckle my shoe bending down tying our shoe laces as part of the body exercise while singing and saying words in a proper pronunciation, that was also language learning.

  • Never there was no dull moments as I shall go home singing what we were singing at school, the share with my family and friends that is why we never used calculators, as my teacher will drill us in mental maths there was no way you could not get the total mark for the speed test as I sleep what I learnt, eat it, bath it, to stay in my mind forever.

  • Excitement over and over again, it was happening as I was hungry for education.

  • There is no way I could change music education, I grow up with it. It is part of my life the thing is technology has taking over, I used manmade musical instruments, like a drum of paraffin for drum and motor oil container for the guitar. It was happening I was never lazy. Nowadays we buy.

TOPIC 4

ART INTEGRATION

  • Arts integration has been proven to contribute towards higher motivation levels among learners and supports academic achievement and socialisation among learners. Schools that encourage teachers to apply arts integration strategies in their teaching have shown improved results with regards to learners’ mathematic performance as well as decreased disciplinary challenges.
  • When learners are encouraged to demonstrate their understanding through the arts, we create teaching and learning environments in which individual learning needs and abilities are met. Through the application of arts integration teaching strategies, we design teaching and learning activities which are inclusive and provide multiple means of engaging with and internalising new knowledge and skills (accommodate various learning styles and preferences
  • Ultimately, through arts integration, foundation phase learners will develop their problem solving and critical thinking skills through engagement in authentic learning activities which foster the ability to become aware of the various ways in which we are not only connected to each other but our world while drawing attention to the ways in which the various subjects in our curriculum are connected. This is especially appropriate in the foundation phase as the CAPS is also written in a way which encourages teachers to draw links between various subjects by integrating various subjects

There is nothing I can change unless all resources that I needed are there, and my wish is that the department of education must subsidize all school with the whole band and orchestra equipment and teachers should go for training unfortunately it will not happen.

TOPIC 5

TEACHING AND LEARNING ASSESSMENT

This is a matter of each one teach one, being in a diverse classroom with multiracial learners we must learn and embrace each others’ culture. S.A is a rainbow nation as I shall accommodating all learners.

We shall practice both Western and African music and sing along and dance along. I shall use the rubric for assessing learners which will include (movement, sounds, flexibility, body language) ranging from 1 low 2 average 3 good.

TOPIC 6

COLLABORATIVE REFLECTION

  1. We need each other as this is a group work.
  2. Our timing as we stay far apart but with technology we could work together on specific time in our whatsapp group to accommodate each member
  3. It was interesting as we are from different cultures we end up embracing each other.

4.With group work as distance student my wish was to meet as a group face to face to discuss openly.

STUDY UNIT 2

Hi to all

Study Unit 2

I was having a hard and tough time during this week but at the end being strong and trying to focus and write many test and quizzes.

Being  part of LSKM 221 is very exciting and interesting learning new skill as well. I learn a lot as a new teacher and life long learner.

This Study Unit  was a great experience and lesson to me because I learn more about integrating music or art in teaching and learning activities. It gives  or teach us as new teachers skills and knowledge of 21st century. Be modern teachers transform learning environment and make it meaningful and meet the developmental needs of every learner through music and art. Including the diverse needs of every learner and use variety of skills and abilities to educate and demonstrate knowledge through music activities.

It even encourage and identify, apply the developmentally appropriate teaching strategies to meet the needs and ability of every leaner as well, using variety of music elements and produce variety of activities. I even recognize that learners need to reveal their talent through art and music in early years.

Through art and music learners will have fun and pleasant environment because foundation phase learners learn through play through kinaesthetically. Music also make learning environment to be meaningful and effective as well. Foundation phase learners need to explore music and be creative and innovative as early as possible. Some learners learn in a different ways so integrating music at early age will help them to explore the world around them and use their talent as a future career as well and put food on table. I believe that with this knowledge and skills it will help many learners and reduce number of drop out at school because some learners will use music as future careers as well

Introduction

Good day everyone I m Tsotetsi ML foundation phase student I currently work at school as grade R teacher and the mother of two children I reside in eastern free state and employed for six years at school as grade R teacher. I'm very humble, caring and loving person I enjoy working with children and it is a great experience for me as well. After matriculating l studied local government management at unisa and lately work in the construction industry as site manager and it was the great experience but very challenging as well. I also register as  BBB EE and work with NPO's  is where I start to work with social development and children then from there I realize that I can still study further as professional teacher

I enjoy cooperative learning as well as teacher is a life long learner I'm looking forward to work with you this semester and hope that we share the excitement  experiences as well and achieve our goal together.

STUDY UNIT 1

According to my level of understanding Vygotsky zone of proxymal development mean two different things that develops the child holistically eg.firstly the present level of development this means that the child could potentially be capable of doing things without any help from others. Secondly is the scaffolding that means the child need guidence or assistance that child could potentially be capable of doing things with help from elders, it can be teacher or parent.

 ERICKSON THEORY

It is based on the fact that the personality of a child it is developed and predetermined through eight stages of psychosocial development from infant to adulthood.

PIAGET Theory

He is the one who rejected the idea of passive learning or given knowledge to the learner. He believes in the four different stages of child development.

Vygotsky theory

He believes that the child could think cognitively and this is affected by their knowledge of social development, social community, socio cultural theory, he also have understanding of the child language is the most powerful tool for gaining language development.

Constructivist learning theory - this is the theory that help learners to construct their own understanding, knowledge of the world through experiencing things by themselves.,and even reflecting on those experiences in other words children explore the world on their own.

Cognitive theory - this theory based on how information is received, organized, stored or even retrieved by the mind and it also help learners cognitively learn in high order thinking skills and understand the most difficult concepts.

Behaviorist theory - this theory explains the way in which person can act in any situation or even based on the way the behavior can can be controlled or even modified, consequences of behavior and reinforcement.

Music is important in foundation phase learners because is fun and learners can easily be inspired easily by integrating music activities during learning this will also help learners and support them or even motivate them  to develop holistically in a fun way.

Physical development - In foundation phase learners need to be developed physically through conducive learning environments sing songs and rhymes activities doing movement up and down kinaesthetically using their bodies.

Social development - In foundation phase learners again must be able to make friends and socialize during classroom activities in small groups they sing rhymes and use different or diverse rhymes and learn other languages as well.

Cognitive development - learners in foundation phase think cognitively the rhyming words and the tone of the songs and rhymes or even think about the beginning sounds they develop the language concepts as well.

Emotional development - during home language learning learners dramatise the story dance and learn through music in a fun way and gain confidence  and self eestem at the same time.

HELLO BLOGERS

STUDY UNIT 4

I'm Tsotetsi grade R educator it is my first time, first-year using this blog  sessions but  to be honest it is very interesting to read and hear different views, learn from others. This session will also expand my knowledge as well. Since last year I been learning through LSKM module learning  new things it is great  and fun.

ART INTEGRATION IN  FOUNDATION PHASE

To integrate art makes learning more meaningful and promote the learning, follows a whole approach to the problem solving. During learning activities art help learners to be able to relate learning to the real life situation. It even help learners to be able to transfer their knowledge and skills, from one area to another. It even engage and promote active learning because foundation phase learners enjoy fun activities with rhythm, kinaesthetically movement, art it helps them in problem solving, experiatial learning, collaborative learning and reflection,as educator when planning you must always integrade activities of two or more learning areas according to(Silverstein &Layne,2010)music and maths eg ,counting how many times to repeat the line of the song.

Integrating art can be applied to  make learning be more seamless in other learning areas, like language and also mathematics, engage learners in teaching and learning so that to encourage them to think, explore  or even draw on their prior knowledge, this activity will also help them to to discover the new concept or even skill and even demonstrate the learners understanding through art activity.  It help learners to learn In the  fun way but in a meaningful manner, learners learn and at the same time exchange or combine  the same  knowledge and skill to art by creating song or dance.

WHY ART IS IMPORTANT IN FOUNDATION PHASE

It important to integrate art in learning because it is fun, inspire and motivate some learners and also support academic achievements, the investigation has proved that most schools that encourage teacher to apply art integration strategies in their teaching and learning this make learners perform and have shown better improvement result  than ever.it also  help to increase socialization among learners as well. During music activity learners sing in small group of ten. It even support, meet and promote the developmental needs of learners, give them opportunity to learn in fun, curious, creative imaginative as well.

ART INTEGRATION AND CAPS

Caps document is the main guideline that helps educator what to teach learners, when to teach the activity and how long, which learning strategies to be used as well. Caps it even promotes the effectiveness of teaching and learning and make meaningful and fun as well. Give teachers multiple modes for demonstrating their understanding to help learners learn. Connect the visual art with reading comprehensive contextualize and bring experiencial learning. It allows learners to connect and apply  variety of skills and use different learning styles. Help to connect personal experience with subjects matter.Art sometimes it changes or improve the  lives of other learners that were not academicaly achieved well, but  being creative in music and dance and use it as proffessional career.we can even say art help to reach other learners who are not otherwise  being reached,it also help to combine or connect student to others at the same time.It provide the opportunities  for people or student in their live and improve the levels of their live as well.

HOW CAN WE TRANSFORM EDUCATION THROUGH MUSIC AND ART

teaching and learning  about music,in a music,on music,with a music,from music,through music ,it developes  a theoretical framework according to(Van Vreden, 2019),Van Vreden (2014)

Art or music is part of curriculum and it helps to transform learning knowledge and skills, help learners  to explore the world around them and engage art or music in their real life experiences.help others to explore new challenge and expiriences at the same time to the real world of real work.it is fun and easy for educator to use the transition between learning area to art like music or song eg, we can use counting song during mathematics counting forward and backward through singing song.other activity singing songsin grade R  during  tidy up routine to make learners aware that its time for transition,or sometimes play soft music when learners working on one on one activity help them to relax.
