Lesson Planning

what are the most aspects to keep in mind when planning a lesson for foundation phase?

The most aspects that  I have learn about that are important for a teacher to use especially when she/he is planning for a lesson is that there should be music at the beginning until the end of the lesson

Always guide  learners in music listening - it give leaners a specific criteria ,specify which element of they should focus on movement activities to perform or question that they need to answer through the music listening activity

The value of utilising arts intergration

The value of utilising  arts intergration is that it help learners to develop creative problem solving skills

Arts instruction help children with the development of motor skills ,language skills ,social skills and decision making

The art provide challenges for learners at all levels

Visual art teach learners about  color ,layout ,perspective and balance all teaching that are necessary  in presentation

Has your perception and priorities with regard to lesson planning and the inclusion of music and the arts throughout your teaching and learning in the foundation phase changed

No my perception have not changed because as the foundation phase teacher i should be able to know how to plan using music in class... the guideness of how to plan a music in class is not that difficult because i can be able to do that when planning a music in class

How do music concepts and related experience relate to life skills ,mathematics and language education

Music elements are the building blocks in music. Through  combining  the  different elements  we can create music. Tone refers to a specific music elements that give music its characteristic sound and through which we differentiate between music and noise

Music elements

Texture- different layers in a piece of music

Tempo- the speed of music

Dynamics- the volume of the music being performed

Tone- the sound of the instrument playing melody or how the singers voice sound

Rhythm- how long or short the sound is

Pitch- the notes going up and down

Timbre- the unique sounds quality of an instrument or sound

Meter- the number of beats in a bar

Harmony-  the instrument that support the melody chorus

Melody - a series of pitches that make a tune

How do music concepts and related experience relate to life skills ,mathematics and language education

As a foundation phase teacher I was introduced to music concepts that I have to use when teaching music in class such tempo, texture and others. Music ignites all areas of child development and skills for school readliness including intellectual, social, emotional, motor language and overall literacy .Music help the body and mind to work together. Exposing children to music during early development helps them learn the sounds and meanings of words.

Life skills and mathematics play a big role in music, as they both use the same music elements .Music can help leaners with addition and subtraction in mathematics. Each note in music get a different number of beats and can be used in a simple math problem. The connection between math and music is that they both use patterns. Music elements such as beat and rhythm can be used when teaching math  such as sequence and counting patterns .So both life skills and mathematics relate when comes to teaching children  music.

Arts Integration in Foundation phase

Firstly ,I will start by defining the concept arts integration. Art integration is an approach to teach in which leaners construct and demonstrate understanding through an art form. Leaners engage in a creative process which connects an art form and another subject area and meets evolving  objectives in both.

I totally disagree with people who say arts integration is just a waste of time in foundation phase,  because arts integration help leaners in understanding and applying skills to standardize  exams, it also help them with prior knowledge assist them in illustructing on how music make them feel by drawing some pictures down explaining  or expressing their feelings. Arts integration activities promote active learning experience through which foundation phase leaners can internalise  new knowledge and skills by understanding of a new concepts. Working in arts help leaners to develop creative problem and solving skills.

Teaching through the art can present a difficult concepts visually ,making them more easy to understand .

Examples of art integration in classroom

*Playing

*Composing music songs

*Drama

How to integrate arts in the classroom

*Encourage the use of art related vocabulary

*Allow leaners to explain through drawing and labelling

*Allow the leaners the opportunity to role play

Holistic development

Holistic education is a relatively new movement in education that seeks to engage all aspect of the leaner including mind, body and spirit . So as a foundation phase teacher I have to try by all means to make leaners to enjoy the subject that I am teaching. As foundation phase educators we cannot disregard the importance of fostering relationships with our learners as well as leaners having opportunities to foster meaningful relationships with their peers.. I am really looking forward to know  more about this module as it looks interesting and might help me in the future as foundation phase teacher.
