1. In the beginning of the semester I thought I had enough knowledge regarding teaching music in the foundation phase, my personal skills I would say have been improved throughout the semester, I have changed a lot in my class, especially when and where to integrate music in my lessons. I really enjoy music so I was very excited to start this module, I enjoyed it so much and I kept on being surprised as to how much new knowledge I gathered throughout the semester. This module has shown me how important music education really is and I am grateful to have had the opportunity to learn new things in a fun and creative way.

2. I learnt a new way of studying module content; this manner is creative and very personal, it allows me to obtain important information and knowledge much easier than writing tests etc. My individual reflections have allowed me to express my understanding and knowledge in a way that is personal and unique. This process has also given me the opportunity to engage with students and see their feelings and point of views.

I didn't really find anything challenging except for this style of writing does not come naturally in the studying environment; you tend to write in a formal manner without realizing it, so I needed to change my thinking and writing process quite a bit, but I must say it has been a blast and I really loved this method of learning the content of this module.

Yes, my individual reflections were very personal and I always tried to speak from my heart rather than just paraphrasing information; also to read other peoples comments and point of views really showed purpose, I learnt a lot about myself and of other people, which really shows the importance of involving personal opinions and experiences into a module.

In future I would probably have added more things to make it more personal, I love writing and journaling, I would have added doodles and handwritten texts just to show my personality and character.

3. I found the integration of music in other subjects fascinating, different styles and techniques a teacher can use to ensure that everyone obtains the knowledge of music in a more personal and learner-centered approach. What was meaningful to me is the fact that music accommodates everyone regardless of cultural background, belief systems and demographics; music creates a platform to really enable children to engage and learn important skills and assets that they would not have mastered without the integration of music. There was not really any challenges in this module, I am a very musical and artsy person, so I really enjoyed this module and I gained valuable knowledge and information that will help me become the best teacher I can and want to be. I would not change anything regarding the content of this module, everything I learnt can be applied to my future teaching practice and the cool things is that this does not only apply to music it applies to all subjects taught in the foundation phase. This module is very interesting and the information and knowledge I gained is very valuable to me, so I would not change anything.

This was a wonderful opportunity to express myself, engage with people all over the country, understand the importance of different cultures South Africa has to offer, and most importantly respecting everyone's creative process and beliefs.

I hope you guys are enjoying the last stretch of this semester, good luck and just remember you've got this ;) All the best and I hope you all enjoyed this module as much as I did:)

Part 1

Hi guys, hope you are well. This month has been hectic, especially this week, so much to do and so little time to do so. I am feeling okay, I have submitted most of my assignments, far from done before the semester ends, but so far everything seems to be on track regarding my studies. I must say working and studying at the same time does take its toll on me sometimes; but I just take a couple of minutes to regather my thoughts and work through the process with a clear and peaceful mind. I hope you are doing alright with your studies :) we nearly there, let's get the semester done and present assignments, projects and tasks we are proud of, I am sure everyone is trying their best. Good luck! I feel a little bit sad that this is the last study unit blog post :( I really enjoy this escape to process my feelings and thoughts in a creative manner. Can't wait to read your blog posts. Like Dory on Finding Nemo says; "Just keep swimming"

Part 2

I have realized that a teacher can't just play certain songs or let the children sing a couple of nursery rhymes and think this has covered teaching music in the classroom; there is a lot more planning and detail that is required for music to be integrated successfully in a lesson, this can be a music lesson or it could be part of a different subjects lesson. I also learnt that music should be taught in a learner-centered approach rather than just instructing or explaining certain concepts. An effective music lesson plan should focus more on how the learners can grasp new knowledge and concepts by utilizing prior knowledge, personal experiences and ensuring that the content and concepts being taught are relatable, and accommodate all learners; different backgrounds, level of understanding, confidence and likes or interests the learners have. The teacher should really plan and consider these aspects very carefully and in as much detail as possible so that each child receives the same amount of knowledge and teaching.

The element of this module I found most significant was the fact that the focus of teaching music as a subject has shifted from a teacher-based approach to a learner-centered approach. I really find it fascinating that teaching music or integrating music into another subjects lesson really allows learners to experience, express, learn and achieve confidence by means of their own understanding, abilities, collaborative skills and social skills. This is an effective manner in ensuring that learners achieve all goals and learning of new concepts in a holistic way and that they are given multiple opportunities to grasp specific concepts within the lesson.

Part 3

I would think the main reasons why assessment is neglected in Performing Arts and Music in the FP is due to the fact that most educators do not understand the importance of the subject, they think it is not really needed for the following phases in the child's schooling career, and most schools do not have the necessary materials or content to achieve optimal planning and assessment strategies because the focus is more towards other subjects than Performing Arts and Music. Also, I found that most teachers use their "music" or "arts" time to relax or focus on other subjects and they do not really plan, present and conclude those lessons in an important or detailed manner. Usually they thumb suck the marks and no proper assessment strategies are used to ensure that each learner has grasped the necessary skills and concepts. The above mentioned sentence is based on my personal experience and I hope most schools are more focused and diligent when it comes to planning and assessment in the Performing Arts and Music subject.

I would show the HOD the importance of assessment; not only for music but every subject. The best way to show or state your argument would be to place the emphasis on how poor or neglected assessment effects the learner's progress, obtaining of new knowledge and skills, struggling areas or concepts that have not been grasped, self-reflection process, and the most important fact is that the teacher will not be aware of the learners skills that need to be improved and will not adapt and change their teaching strategies accordingly. Continuous assessment plays a vital role in a learners development and schooling career; if no assessment is made the progress of the learner and teacher would stagnate and no new knowledge, skills and learning/teaching will take place.

This study unit has really opened my eyes in terms of ensuring the best teaching and learning environment takes place. It has shown me that I need to put more effort into my planning and assessments when it comes to Music; I will apply what I have learnt to all my lesson plans and assessment criteria in all subjects not only Music. I have realized now how important lesson planning and continuous assessment is for the learner's development and that this approach will enhance my children's skills, level of thinking and knowledge grasped in a more holistic manner as to what is currently happening at my school. This modules information has given me the confidence to speak up and raise awareness of the importance of proper and detailed planning, and also how important proper assessment strategies are for the children in my class.

Part 1

This week has been good, finally on holiday so this will give me some extra time for my studies. I am excited to finish as much as possible now that I can just focus on university work; hopefully I can get a lot done so my workload is less once the fourth term starts. Hope you are all well and studying hard. We have planned a trip to Cape Town for the holidays, so that is going to be a challenge juggling leisure and study time; but like they say, 'no rest for the wicked'. Good luck with all your assignments and projects, I hope you guys have submitted most of your stuff that is due before efundi is under maintenance.

Part 2

This was a very interesting study unit; I was intrigued by how using arts integration can benefit the learners in so many aspects and levels, knowing that when using or incorporating arts integration one must make sure to integrate two or even more subjects in a flowing manner. Arts integration allows learners to grasp concepts and knowledge in a more creative manner which in return ensures that learners use prior knowledge gained to understand new concepts being taught, because they find it more interesting and hands on than the theoretical or 'normal' teaching style.

The element that was most significant to me was Van Vreden's theoretical framework for the integration of music in the FP; especially the fact that this was developed for the South African schooling system, I am happy to see that we are progressing when it comes to the arts and culture in our curriculum. I found it interesting how one can integrate music in different ways. This knowledge I have obtained will help me in my career as a FP teacher. This was a very insightful unit and it just intrigues me even more to find out what this module has to offer.

Part 3

1. First of all, everyone has their own opinion and way of thinking; how you change people’s minds is very important. I would most definitely disagree with that statement and briefly name the benefits of arts integration in the FP. The main benefit of arts integration is that students are able to express themselves more freely, they are more passionate about their learning and they engage using more aspects than only the mind. Arts integration also allows all students from different backgrounds, cultures, and beliefs to participate at an even playing field, this in return improves confidence and children become prouder of themselves and achieve more for themselves than just the 'standard' way of learning and teaching.

2. I found the research supporting arts integration very interesting; how this concept not only improves children in the academical aspect but improves their lives in a holistic manner. Not only does arts integration stimulate and improve reading, literacy and writing skills but also improves the cognitive developmental skills which are extremely important. This allows all learners to become the best they can be and allows everyone to have equal opportunity; this is very important for me because a child is supposed to enjoy learning experiences, and this is the best way to do so.

I found the different techniques and strategies very challenging; I am not well-versed regarding arts integration in the classroom and FP; but I want to improve my skills in this specific concept because I find that this will only improve the cognitive growth and emotional development of my children in my class.

This has been my favourite unit thus far and I cannot wait to get started next term using what I have learnt; there are so many ideas swimming around in my head and hopefully I can change the minds of my colleagues and they too can be as excited about arts integration as I am.

Part 1

I can't believe we are almost done with September, this semester is flying past very quickly. At the moment everything is good; most of my projects and assignments are in, so my workload has become less in the past week. We reaching the end of third term; so progress reports need to be written, which is taking up some of my study time, but I am managing to finish most of my work, studies and personal life goals. So I would say this week has been good thus far.

Part 2

I have learnt that there is more to it than just 'playing' when it comes to children in the Foundation Phase play. Children learn through play; this has been established by numerous of cognitive developmental programs. I have learnt that there are different types of play: Free play, guided play and directed play; and that the learners develop different skills and concepts through each type of play. Also, the different type of levels of social play have taught me that children at different age groups are building relationships and developing important social skills through each level of play.

The concept that stood out for me the most are the seven elements of play; this has shown me a different outlook regarding play and how important play really is in the classroom environment. This study unit has also shown me the importance of integrating play in the music education environment; it is a more fun and exciting way to learn and teach music and the children absorb more information through doing activities that interest them.

Part 3

1. If learners do not understand what is expected of them or they do not understand the content or concept being taught they tend to feel excluded, un-motivated and shy or embarrassed. Due to the different cultural backgrounds in the South African schooling system; some children might struggle with individual cultural morality or belief systems, because of the vast and differentiated themes and content that needs to be taught and utilized.

2. In the scenario the learners felt uncomfortable because they did not understand what was being sung, and they could not participate to their full capacity due to the lack of understanding the lyrics of the songs. Whilst others felt embarrassed and shy due to them having a personal religious or moral dilemma.

3. In future, if songs are chosen I would first teach the learners the meaning of the lyrics if it is a different language to their own, this will ensure that the learners can easily relate to what is being listened to or sung. They will feel part of the group and not excluded from the activity. As a teacher one should always ask the learners for understanding and to ensure that each one is on the same page; check for clarity and assist learners that still feel uncertain about a specific concept or topic. I would also communicate with my learners and always touch base to ensure everyone is comfortable and no boundaries are being crossed. An open relationship ensures that learners are comfortable in any situation and if they do not want to participate in an activity due to cultural or religious reasons, they have the confidence and capability to inform whoever is facilitating the activity.

4. It is very difficult to accommodate each and every learners needs regarding cultural, diverse and religious backgrounds without insulting or stepping on toes. One should always be as honest and transparent as possible and one should teach and instill respect and acceptance within the classroom environment. Learners should be taught all different cultures and beliefs; and the adult must ensure that they respect and understand each other. Children should feel safe; and have the capability of communicating if they feel unsure or unsafe. The most important thing a teacher must beware of is assumption; do not just assume based on your own understanding and knowledge that the content will be fine and relatable, always ask the learners and include them in the choice of content, song or activity- this will prevent situations like the one in the scenario. In order for children to feel included and accepted they should be given the opportunity to participate and communicate if their personal boundaries are being taken advantage of.

Study Unit 2

Part 1:

Hi guys! Hope you are all well and coping with your studies:)

This has been a hectic couple of weeks!

Ups and Downs galore, but I am still on track with all my due dates.

I am feeling very overwhelmed at the moment, lots to do in so little time, but I am not giving up :)

I love this Modules Blog post platform, this is the time where I can be creative and just unwind.

Keep up the good work and do not give up, we have got this semester covered :)

Part 2:

The new things I became aware of were the different approaches to music education and how each approach is so different yet so important in regards to teaching music in the Foundation Phase. The most significant concept was how the different approaches to music education have different criteria on how you can make music fun and creative within the classroom; this being said as a Foundation Phase teacher, I can now use these different approaches and use them to suit each individuals needs and learning styles in my classroom. Because everyone learns and thinks in different ways, these approaches have really open my mind to incorporating each approach in my music lessons to help all my learners grasp the knowledge and concepts required in order for them to fully relate to and understand what music is and how each individual can express themselves in their unique ways and having the opportunity to do so based on what I have learnt thus far.

Part 3:

1. I would utilize indigenous African music; the reason for this is that the demographics in my classroom are more compatible with this type of music due to their cultural backgrounds, they can relate more to this type of music and in a whole they will grasp the concepts quicker. This is not to say that I will solely use this type of music, I just think as a teacher one should focus on the majority in your classroom; you enable the children to be more confident and excited in learning the music and in return this develops social developmental skills for the minority and they can learn about different cultures in the process. Needless to say, I believe one should utilize all types of music and the culture it brings in your classroom; this ensures that each individual will relate to the content being taught, and it enables the learners to learn new things regarding different cultures and backgrounds.

2. Yes, the content offered in this study unit is definitely inclusive. The instruments presented are both Western and African; this means that learners can learn about different instruments from different cultures and that will enable them to engage with one another and learn from one another rather than stereotyping or mainstreaming them when it comes to music. The song choices offer songs from both Western and African cultures; even though children can easily engage and participate in music activities, selecting a variety of songs from different cultural backgrounds allow all the children to feel important and can take part in the activities because they can relate to their heritage, culture or beliefs.

3. I think overall the content is inclusive, but I would add different types of Western cultures meaning not only Afrikaans and English songs; the community I live in are majority German speaking and I have a few German speaking children in class; I would say one could incorporate different cultures music and songs depending on the demographics of your classroom and the different cultures each individual represents.

Study Unit 1

Part 1:

I am feeling very confident at the moment. I have completed all my tasks before the due dates, which usually never happens in my case. I have decided to hand in all my work on the submission date rather than waiting to submit on the actual due date; this has helped me a lot and I am managing my time regarding studies much better. I am a single mom, and I have a full time job so managing my time has always been an issue. Luckily I am getting better at it and I give 100% of my time, effort and energy to all three areas. So far my week has been great, and I am in a good mindset at the moment.

Part 2:

I learnt a variety of new things regarding music and what should be taught in the Foundation Phase. The most interesting and significant concept I learnt and was made aware of is how the different ages have specific requirements on how grasping the concept of music; this is very important because if you teach music and you are not aware of these developmental stages you could actually harm the process of the child's development when it comes to teaching music in a specific age group within the Foundation Phase. Piaget's cognitive development theory and how this module interlinks the teaching of music according to the operational stages was very insightful.

Part 3:

1. I am very confident at the moment in teaching music through movement in the FP. I studied music and obtained UNISA certificates in playing the piano. I am very passionate about music in general and this module has taught me insightful things that I can use to improve my understanding of the 'actual' teaching of music. I teach 4 year old's at the moment and I incorporate music in most activities on a daily basis. My confident levels have definitely improved, due to the fact that I have gained so much knowledge regarding teaching and integrating of music in the FP.

2. If I had to choose between the two, I would lean more into choosing music education. The reason for this choice is as follows: Children in general are very active at school, they learn through play in most aspects and concepts. Physical development happens either way, whereas music is not that present in most school curriculums. Music education has many benefits regarding the holistic developmental needs of children. According to Martin (2014) music enhances language skills; this can aid learners in improving their communication skills and also learning additional languages. Music has been proven to enhance the scores of written tests; Martin (2014) states that children who have music education in their curriculum have better test scores than those who do not. Music is a confidence booster and children develop a better self-esteem (Martin,2014). I can totally agree with this, children love to be acknowledged and enjoy anything when it is fun and creative. Music is a platform which allows children to experiment, learn knew things, and express themselves in a creative way which automatically boosts their confidence levels. Music has also shown improvement in Listening and Mathematical skills. Music and Mathematics go hand in hand; if a child understands certain concepts of Music they understand Mathematical concepts as well (Martin, 2014). Overall I find Music education has more pros when it comes to the holistic developmental needs of a child, and schools should incorporate music education into their curriculums. Many studies have shown that Music is an important aspect in a child's development, especially cognitive development and this just proves how important Music education actually is.

Introduction

12 Aug 2021, 20:00 Publicly Viewable

Hi, my name is Abigail Holliday. I am a single mom and have a beautiful daughter called Aurora. We live in a small town called Paulpietersburg in the KZN province. I am currently teaching at a Pre-Primary School, I teach Grade RRR. I am very passionate when it comes to children, and I love teaching them and seeing them progress. The reason why I chose to study FP is because I would like to have a teaching degree so that I can teach all children in the Foundation Phase and not be limited to only teaching ECD children. I would like to further my education degree; I find cognitive development very interesting and I would like to eventually obtain a doctorate in that field. I am a very 'artsy' person and love brining in creativeness in any subject. I am passionate about art, music and literature. I love being creative and also love to see the smile on the children's faces once they have created something or learnt something new. I am very excited about this module and can not wait to learn new things regarding Music in the Foundation Phase. I expect this module to be fun and insightful and can't wait to see my progress throughout this semester. Ill end off with one of my favorite quotes: "It is the supreme art of the teacher to awaken joy in creative expression and knowledge" - Albert Einstein
