FINAL BLOG, INDIVIDUAL REFLECTION

8 Dec 2021, 07:31 Publicly Viewable

As an LSKM 221 student, I have learned that it is very crucial to implement  or to utilize music in foundation phase. As learners learn faster when using music. They get to enjoy and collaborate. I never thought that integrating arts and music in the foundation phase class will have a positive impact on learners regarding everything I have learned and I didnt know a lot about music but yet,I am equipped with knowledge.

What did you find challenging?

The challenge I faced is integrating music with different subjects.

Did you find individual reflections meaningful?

Yes, because this enables me to identify what I did not understand and where do i  need to develop knowledge.

what would you had the opportunity in future?

I would pay more attention on music education more that I used to as it is crucial to utilize in foundation phase class. It clearly shows that learners learn better when the music is intergrated in a lesson.

What did you find interesting?

Making a video on one of the work we were given to us. Sharing ideas and learning more from my group members was also interesting because I got to understand what I did not understand.

SU 4: ARTS INTEGRATION

8 Dec 2021, 07:17 Publicly Viewable

Arts integration is an approach to teaching in which learners make and demonstrate understanding through an art form or using art.

An integration in the foundation phase is not a waste of time because learners get to reveal or show what the understand as well as showing skills through arts. This also encourages active engagement, learners collaborate. It is important to note that, when designing arts integration of two or more subjects (Silverstein & Layne, 2010), that both subjects must be experienced and engaged with at the same time within an activity. Arts integration enables educator to support and promote the developmental needs of learners.

What did you find interesting, explain.

what is interesting in art integration is that, you get to see new things, for example music instruments which is Maracas, Tambourines,etc... you get to explore and know how to design them. What is interesting again is that, learners get to learn faster which makes us teachers greatful and wanting to utilize them more often as they are so helpful in the lessons.

What did you find challenging, explain.

The challenging part comes when i want to explain how will the lesson be like, and what will happen after. Constructing or arranging my sentences to make more sense, that is my challenge.

SU3: MUSIC PLAY IN THE FOUNDATION PHASE.

8 Dec 2021, 05:14 Publicly Viewable

Play is prominent in several African cultures and general African context, where we often find elements of play when people engage with music and dance activities.

-What possibly made some learners uncomfortable during these activities?

Singing a Zulu song as they did not know what it means.

-why were some learners uncomfortable?

Because they were not used to dance in front of boys and to house music due to religious reasons.

-ways to address these issue in future, what will you change?

Speaking language that everyone understands.

Dance only if you are willing unless stated other wise, as this is a music play, movement is needed

-How can we accommodate diverse learners profiles in our classrooms?what must we beware of?

Accomodating diverse learners is when utilizing tha language which everyone understands. And we must beware of racism

SU2: LISTENING TO AND RESPONDING TO MUSIC

8 Dec 2021, 04:26 Publicly Viewable

Listening and responding to music is important especially in foundation phase. Let me start by music concepts.

1.Beat- A steady and regular pulse we hear in music.

2.Pitch- How low and high the music sounds.

3.Harmony- When two or more notes are played at the same time.

4.Rhythm- The combination or regular repeated pattern formed by different lengths of movement or sound.

5.Timbre- Sound that allows you to separate instruments even when the are playing at the same time.

Learners utilize movement   if maybe the teacher instructed them to demonstrate beat by clapping,  this way they are showing the music concept which is beat.Music concepts makes a lesson more enjoyable and learners get to collaborate while responding to the music.

SU1- Music and holistic development

I have been good. My problem has been time management but fortunately I managed to tackle it and I managed to go through or to study SU1.

I have learned that holistic development is about the development of a learner/a child. This includes, Physical development, cognitive development, emotional development, personal and social development.

Music is a very crucial instrument/tool to utilize in a foundation phase because learners concentrate more. It also increase ability to demonstrate whatever is taught.
