Part 1:
I really enjoyed this module a lot and I feel that I have learned in more ways then one. Some of the work really challenged me to think outside of the box and really consider what the learners will enjoy. I do believe that I have done well, but there are still some aspects of the work that I do not fully grasp due to personal preferences, for example the use of YouTube videos etc. But I feel I still have a lot to learn and grow, I look forward to it all.
Part 2:
The time management aspect of the individual reflections with all my other work, was the most difficult aspect of it all, but overall I really learned through writing down how I felt and my opinion on all the topics. It forced me to do constant self-reflection as I completed the module work and I must say I found it to be very rewarding and enjoyable. It allowed me to take a personal stance on each topic and made me realize the things that are really important to me as a future teacher, also the role I want to play in my learners life's. It really helped me to establish the classroom I want to create one day.
Part 3:
I feel that this module is really valuable and helps you grow as a future teacher. The work was interesting and the assignments are very enjoyable, it also challenges the creative side within you and helps you to think what they learners in your class will enjoy. It did not enjoy the collaborative questions as much as I whished, due to the fact that I feel most of the time a repetition of the same things said kept occurring and I did not really feel it helped me learn or understand better. For me personally I felt that it was only a swapping of personal opinion, the personal experience one took from all the work and sharing did not really change your own opinion, you just became aware of the fact that not everyone sees it the same way as you. But it did however made me aware of the fact that in practice not everyone will share in my personal experience, opinion or my personal preference of how things should be done and that learned me to always respect, appreciate differences.
Part 1:
This week as been busy but wonderful. I really enjoyed my week, I had some extra curricular activities and I balance it well with my studies. I planned very well and made sure that I got to everything on time.
Part 2:
I once again became aware of the fact what huge responsibility rests on the shoulders of an teacher. That you always, always need to make the learners your first priority and ensure that they get the most out of their learning experience. I really enjoyed this study unit and learned a lot.
Part 3:
I think it could possibly be neglected due to the fact that the teachers and appointed personal might be afraid to approach assessment with such young learners. The learners are at a delicate age and considering the fact that one can quite easily make the learners feel insecure or brake their spirit if it is not approached in the correct way. Young learners tend to not take losing or feeling like their work is not good enough very well. Which is totally understandable, but I think assessment needs to be approached in a way that they learners understand it is not personal. One can not always be the best and we assess because we want to do better and keep doing better. Another reason is also that the teachers/personal might not be educated enough to feel as if they can assess the children in the correct way. They might feel they do not have an adequate amount of knowledge to do an assessment.
I think it is very important to address this in the correct way, to discuss this with all the educators present and really get a good idea of what everyone's feelings are around the topic. The most important thing to keep in mind with matter like this, is that the children should be our first priority. We need to ensure that they receive the absolute best out of their learning experience and this includes being assess in order to better their skills etc.
Part 1:
This week has been very good, I feel that I am finally getting back into a rhythm and I feel less stressed. It is really nice to look at your planner, seeing the assignment, tests etc. slowly but surely getting less and you have a wonderful prospect of a vacation ahead.
Part 2:
I really became aware of the fact that I really love that teaching has such a wide variety of methods and ways you can reach your learners. I love how diverse teaching can be and how fun you can make learning for your students if you put in the effort.
Part 3:
1. I feel that the people who makes such a statement does not really have knowledge of the topic and perhaps not even how to apply it, thus making a statement like "arts integration is a waste of time". In the Foundation Phase I have experienced what art integration can do for learners. The purpose of integrating art with the work the learners do, is soulfully to better their understanding of concepts and to get them actively involved with the work they learn. By doing this learners get to experience the work not only in a fun and interactive way, but they also get to experience the concept art in a practical way, they encounter what art is all about in way they can relate to.
In my opinion art integration in the foundation phase is very important, learners in the foundation phase learn by doing, playing and the best way you can utilize their learning experience is to ensure that learning takes place in all areas of the classroom. By integrating art learners are having fun, getting a interactive and wholesome learning experience without them even being aware of the fact that school is taking place.
2. Everything about study unit for was very interesting and insightful to me. I really enjoyed this study unit a lot and learned so much. I feel that this study unit will help me a lot in practice and really help a lot with becoming a better teacher and ensuring that my learner get the absolute best learning experience.
Part 1:
This week was still very busy and there was lots to do, but emotionally it was a much better week then the previous ones. I think I found my feet in this new semester and most definitely worked harder, I found my motivation. What makes me positive and give me strength to work hard is how accomplished you feel when you get to tick the one thing after the other from your 'To do list'. Also seeing the weeks go by and knowing the year is almost over, provided an amazing feeling and helps me to get thing done. I keep reminding myself at the end of this year, there is only two more years to go, then I have the honor to do what I love.
Part 2:
I really became aware of how important it is to always remember that your are working with children who are unique individuals. I realized that I must never loose focus on how important the work I do is and what I can mean to children. I became aware of the big responsibility that rests on the shoulders of a teacher.
Part 3:
I think what could possibly make some learners uncomfortable is the fact that it is unfamiliar. Due to the fact that the learners do not come from the same background or share the same culture, singing a song of which the words you do not understand, dancing to music that is not in agreement with how you grew up or your believes, could be very much so daunting. The learners might feel uncomfortable because they feel insecure in what they are doing, if one do not understand the reason or purpose for doing something, why do it? Not even mentioning enjoying and appreciating it!
I think the thing to keep mind in situations like this, is that a lack of understanding for one another's cultures could cause children to feel this way. I think to rather explain to the learners what the words mean, give context into the game, dance and music could help to promote understanding, respect and appreciation for one another's backgrounds. If it is not in your culture and it is not how you were raised, it can be very hard to expect young children to understand the why's behind everything.
There for I believe that you can educate children on different cultures, allow each child to share their experience and way of doing, in this way learners get to encounter a little piece of each other that makes each learner unique. We can teach our learners to appreciate that each culture is unique, we can teach them to respect each culture and the difference there might be. But we can not expect learners to be completely comfortable or to necessarily be in agreement with everything. With that being said, learners need to know it is most definitely not required to alter your believes, how you feel or your point of view, but it is most definitely required to respect diversity and appreciate the fact that we are all different. Explain to learners how beneficial it is to get to experience more than one way of doing, more than one point of view and more than one way of living. Learners need to understand that there is nothing wrong with having a opinion, different culture and different point of view, you can however not force someone to share in your believes, but you are obligated to respect different believes, points of view and cultures.
I think when you find yourself in a situation like this, the most important thing to keep in mind is that learners should feel proud to share their culture, believes and experience. Learners should also know that even though their culture, believes and experience might differ, it is nonetheless important. Children should be proud of who they are and where the came from and it is the teachers job to promote those feelings. I think the only way to do that is to portray each culture, believe and experience as honest as possible, acknowledge the authenticity and allow learners to present the lesson on their specific culture or believe with you, give them the honor of sharing exactly what makes them unique and what they are familiar with. Emphasize the importance of how wonderful the world is precisely because we are all different and share different believes. I mean how boring would life be if we all where the same?
Part 1:
This has been one crazy week already and it is only Wednesday, I feel very overwhelmed and most definitely stressed about everything that needs to be done and finished this week. I have a very full schedule and I find it very difficult to get everything done on time and plan accordingly, especially because I want everything to be done perfect and I want to do good. I stay focused on what needs to be done and just do it to the best of my abilities and try not to let the stress distort me.
Part 2:
Something I became aware of was basic music elements, it is very straight forward if you think about it, but it is something I never really took must notice of so it was very interesting to learn about. An idea that also really became clear to me during this study unit was how interesting, fun, interactive etc. you can make your classroom by just including music. It reminded me how much I love music and why I like to include it in my lessons, the study unit just reassured me that I can even include it to a much bigger extend and also in much more different ways.
Part 3:
1. I would choose al three and would like to include al three music styles in my classroom. The reason I would do it is because I feel that it is very important for children to experience more than one style, culture etc. It enriches their lives, experiences, learning processes and they learn to appreciate everything for their uniqueness. It is also in my opinion very good to do it this way because children can experience a little part of each others world's, it includes everyone and makes learners proud to share something that is unique to their upbringing with the rest of their classmates.
2. I do think that the content is inclusive because it mentions a lot of different aspects, styles, forms etc. It gives you a very, very good idea about music and everything that goes with it, it most certainly enriched my knowledge.
3. I do not think it could be more inclusive, I feel that the content of study unit 2 was very well put together and was very detailed. You learned a lot by simply reading through the study unit power point, when you take a look and read through all the resources provided for study unit two, you really gain a lot of knowledge and understanding. I think that the value of this content for teaching practice is very valuable and you will most definitely use it in your classroom. The value do not only apply to classroom situation, but even now with assignments, lesson plans etc. the content that was taught comes into play. You gain so much new information and ideas by just working through all the content, I believe it helps a lot and carries significant value.
Part 1:
This week has been one of those weeks where I constantly felt overwhelmed. I still struggle to find my feet at the beginning of this second semester and I struggle to find motivation. I really have to discipline myself to focus on what has to be done, what is going on in front of me, rather than focusing on what is going on around me. I find it hard in this time in my life to focus on work, I feel like there is a million things running through my head, a million things that needs to be done and I experience a million feelings all at once. The week was a hard one for me, but I am optimistic that the coming week will be better.
Part 2:
I really became aware of development and everything that goes with it. The types of development and also the importance of it. I found it to be very interesting. The part that was very significant to me was the whole subject about music, the importance of it and also what it can mean and do for students.
Part 3:
1. The work is still relatively new to me and I came to realize like most modules I still have a lot to learn and knowledge to build up on. I feel fairly confidant in my current knowledge and experience to teach music through movement to foundation phase learners. Music through movement is something I used a lot in my classroom, I feel it really helps get learners excited to learn and helps them to have fun while learning. I usually look for music and dance choreography during my lesson preparations that can really help to explain the concepts better or elaborate on the topics. I usually use music through movement in my introduction phase of my lessons to get the learners interested, excited and actively involved with their learning.
2. I have to start of by saying that it is a really hard choice for me because I feel that both these types of education have their own unique way of reaching children and also in my opinion walk hand in hand. I think what also makes it hard to choose, is the fact that both these types of education can help teachers reach different types of students, really connect with student on different levels. Based on students personality types, some students might get more out of musical education than physical education and vice versa. But given the instruction to choose one and motivate my answer, I would have to go with physical education. My choice is made based upon the fact that I have more experience with physical education. I can also testify about everything physical education can teach a child, because I received physical education myself. Anything from discipline, sportsmanship, building character, a sense of growth and belonging, are all things children can get from physical education. Physical education is truly something that engages and develops mind, body and spirit. But I have to finish off by saying if the area I grew up in had a wider range of musical education and I got to experience it more, I do believe my opinion would change a bit.
My name is Chrizelle Roux and I am a distance student from Namibia. This might sound as the biggest cliché, but honestly there is nothing in this world I am more passionate about than children. I love everything about teaching and working with children everyday. I believe it is my God given purpose in life and I strive to be the sources of love, hope and laughter every child needs. One of the big reasons I want to be a Foundation Phase teacher is because the learners really make it an adventure every day, it is also the phase of teaching where I believe you can really build strong and loving relationships with your learners. The type of relationship where literally every learner in my class feels like my own children. I am really passionate about children, child development, child psychology and everything children.
I really enjoyed LSKA 211, it was a very fun and enjoyable module. I got to be very creative and really practice my skills for the classroom, I am very optimistic that LSKM 221 would also learn me a lot and that I can really practice my creative skills. I hope that it would help my grow into the best teacher I can be! When I see that the module is about music, I get a little nervous because though I like music and it is in many ways a source of therapy, I am not musical at all. But I look forward to seeing everything this module will bring and I hope to learn & grow.
