This module was really fun, interesting & fruitful. I have learnt a lot about music & how it can be used to meet academic goals. I have also learnt about how music contributes towards the  development of learners & how it can be used as a daily routine to remind learners about the important duties they must do for the day. The learning theories contributed a lot because we can apply them to identify learners & be able to nurture their development well. This module is such an interesting module & it will surely contribute towards our work when we become super teachers. Thank you

HOLISTIC DEVELOPMENT

  • Explain your understanding of Vygotsky’s zone of proximal development.

This theory of proximal development focuses social cultural factors that are influencing cognitive development of children. It also emphasize the essential role of social interaction and language development. One must learn a child's learning needs and stages of development  by knowing their social enviroment and the influence that social factors on personal level.

  • Summarise the most important aspects of the learning theories of Erikson, Piaget and Vygotsky for your teaching practice as foundation phase teacher.

ERIKSON

Erikson's theory focus on the stages of psychological development and it draws focus on the fluence of social interaction and relationships on learning.

PIAGET

This theory focus on the emphasis of cognitive development on the notion that children learn by having interactions with the world and that they build new knowledge based on their existing knowledge and skills

VYGOTSKY

This theory of proximal development focuses social cultural factors that are influencing cognitive development of children. It also emphasize the essential role of social interaction and language development. One must learn a child's learning needs and stages of development  by knowing their social enviroment and the influence that social factors on personal level.

Why is it important to have basic knowledge about the musical development of foundation phase learners?

Basic knowledge will help them manage other subjects. What I mean is that learners will have the capabilities to integrate music with other subjects. They will be able to create songs and poems using notes from other subjects as lyrics. This will make their learning progress easy and fruitful.

  • Create suggestions for music activities which will support the various developmental areas of foundation phase learners (see 1.3.1 – 1.3.5). Formulate at least three music activities that could support and promote each developmental area.

Physical development

Give learners different music instruments so that they play them will singing. The playing of this instruments will help them develop fine motor skills.

Cognitive development

Learners will be asked to make a song using their mother tongue. A translanguaging teacher will translate the song in other languages. This will help learners to better their vocabulary and enhance diversity.

MUSICAL PLAY IN THE FOUNDATION PHASE.

  • What possibly made some learners uncomfortable during these activities?

The Zulu language that was being used to sing the song

  • Why were some learners uncomfortable?

I think some learners where uncomfortable due to the language that was used to sing the song and play the game. One        may find it uncomfortable to play a game and sing a song using a language that they do not understand. They didn't              understand the Zulu terms or the meaning of the song.

  • Can you think of ways to address these issues in future? What will you change?

In future there must translanguaging teachers. This well help diverse learners in the classroom to engage and be comfortable in their own languages because the translanguaging teacher will there to help.

  •  How can we accommodate diverse learner profiles in our classrooms? What must we beware of?

The use of translanguaging can a solution to accommodate diverse learners in the classroom.

ARTS INTEGRATION

This study unit is focused on integrating art in various subjects to meet the learning outcomes of those subjects . Arts integration in foundation phase is not a waste of time because it promotes teaching and learning strategies which focus on the outcomes of the lesson. Arts integration in foundation phase is the ultimate reason why academic goals are met in foundation phase. It also enhance active learning through experiences, collaborative learning, development of skills and problem solving skills. It also help teachers to keep track of their learners learning progress by looking at prior knowledge application before lesson. Teachers are able to identify which areas in the learners needs intervention, improvement, limitation and parent involvement.

INTEGRATING ARTS WITH MATHEMATICS AND LIFE SKILLS

Grade: 2
Topic: MULTIPLICATION AND DIVISON

Division and multiplication can simply relate to music notes and note values. I will ask the learners to make a crotchet\one beat “Taa” divided by two beats “Ti-Ti” which will means 1 ÷ 2 = ½. The following diagram clearly explains this lesson.

HOW DO MUSIC CONCEPTS AND RELATED EXPERIENCES RELATE TO LIFE SKILLS, MATHEMATICS AND LANGUAGE?

MATHEMATICS

Mathematics is the science of numbers, quantity and space with calculations, measurements, time, length, etc. Music is split according to the length of song, time of beats, length of lyrics and the length of the song. Notes are determined by their high\low length and time. By learning music, learners are actually enhancing their mathematical skills to measure length of notes, calculate the number of beats, calculate the total numbers of high and low notes and know the length of the song. Music and mathematics intergrade very well because the both of them also enhance the counting skills of learners where learning can count how many times they have to repeat a certain hook before they get into a chorus.

LIFE SKILLS AND LANGUAGE.

Different languages can be used to compose one song with 1 meaning. This method can be used to enhance translanguaging. Translanguaging can be used in the classroom to make the content taught by the teacher more relatable to learners.
