1. WHAT ARE THE MOST IMPORTANT ASPECTS TO KEEP IN MIND WHEN PLANNING FOUNDATION PHASE LESSONS

- Link content to real life as well as current social and political issues .

-Any music that is listened to in class must contribute towards reaching the lesson aims .

-Accommodate various learning styles , abilities and interest of learners .

-When explaining something , facilitate an activity and ask open-ended questions.

-Assessment must be most appropriate for specific activities based on lesson , developmental stage and learning process .

2.WHAT IS YOUR OPINION ABOUT THE VALUE OF UTILISING ARTS INTEGRATION AND PLAY IN FOUNDATION PHASE LESSON?

Arts integration and play are extremely important for the development of social and creative thinking skills .Learners can have fun while learning and demonstrate their understanding in a practical setting . Learners can also have fun while engaging in authentic , relevant teaching and learning activities when arts integration is used .

3.HAS YOUR PERCEPTION AND PRIORITIES WITH REGARDS TO LESSON PLANNING & INCLUSION OF MUSIC ( AND THE ARTS) THROUGHOUT YOUR TEACHING & LEARNING IN FOUNDATION PHASE CHANGED ?

Yes , integrating music and the arts in the lesson has a significant impact on learners . It allows learners to use art to demonstrate their grasp of the subject .Integrating music and art into the Foundation phase encourages learners to be actively engaged in the lesson while also assisting in the development of social and creative thinking skills . The use of music in the classroom increases learners' eagerness to learn . On the other perspective , it allows learners to have fun while learning in  a real and relevant way .

Arts integration is a teaching method that emphasizes active participation in teaching and learning activities , as well as experiential learning , genuine learning , collaborative learning , problem-solving skills , and reflection . When planning arts integration activities , keep in mind that there must be a seamless integration of two or more subjects ( e.g , music and visual arts , music and language , music and math , music and life skills) and both must be experienced and engaged with at the same time within an activity ( Silverstein & Layne , 2010).

Arts integration provides teachers with the opportunity to promote and support the developmental needs of learners while offering learners the opportunity to engage in teaching and learning activities which are fun , fosters collaboration and connection and promotes learners' innate curiosity , creativity and imaginative abilities .

The aspects that are in the theoretical framework for arts integration in the Foundation phase.

WHAT POSSIBLY MADE SOME LEARNERS UNCOMFORTABLE DURING THESE ACTIVITIES ?

Choice of song which was in Zulu and the other learners were struggling with pronouncing and understanding it and the other one was religious/cultural barrier.

WHY WERE SOME LEARNERS UNCOMFORTABLE ?

Some learners were struggling to understand the language of the song whereas the other one found it challenging to dance in front of boys as it is not practiced nor allowed in her culture .

CAN YOU THINK OF WAYS TO ADDRESS THESE ISSUES IN FUTURE ? WHAT WILL YOU CHANGE ?

Provide the necessary knowledge of activities and translate songs to make sure that other learners get to understand what is being said . In addition , do background research on learners as to accommodate their different home languages , cultural backgrounds and religious beliefs.

HOW CAN WE ACCOMMODATE DIVERSE LEARNER PROFILES IN OUR CLASSROOMS ? WHAT MUST WE BE AWARE OF ?

Highlight the diversity of your classroom to the learners , get to know your learners and build relationships with them and provide an array of different learning tools .

MUSIC EDUCATION APPROACHES

There are a variety of music education approaches which can be used to explain and/or teach a song and music concepts. Carl Orff's , Zoltan Kodaly , Emile Jaques-Dalcroze are the three most well-known approaches to music instruction that emphasize music and movement.

INCLUSIVITY

The examples and content offered in study unit 2 are inclusive as they address the unique needs for our learners by encouraging learners to engage with all their senses when engaging with music ( hear the sound , feel the instrument / vibration , move to music , smell the wood smell of instruments , see the instruments , look at images ,ect) using various types of movements , singing in various languages , playing different games , including various patterns during rhythmic and body percussion activities to enable all learners to experience success.

EXPERIENCING AND FACILITATING MUSIC CONCEPTS THROUGH MOVEMENT , SONG , AND GAMES.

Learners listen to music a lot in order to pick up on different components of it . They can use locomotor or non-locomotor actions to demonstrate the music notion they identified .They can , for example show the melodic contour in pitch using their hands , walking to the beat and clapping to the rhythm , as well as employing body percussion to clap or stomp their feet , can help them understand the difference between meter and rhythm.

HOW DO MUSIC CONCEPTS AND RELATED EXPERIENCES RELATE TO LIFE SKILLS , MATHEMATICS AND LANGUAGE EDUCATION ?

Life skills learners learn a variety of skills in  music education such as multitasking , social skills , communication skills , and so on , and these skills help them develop their cognitive skills . To improve Mathematical understanding there's use of music and musical notation as tools . Furthermore , learners sing songs in a variety of languages and learn new words on a daily basis in terms of Language education.

SU 1 Holistic development (music)

I haven't been feeling well lately therefore this has prevented me from effectively studying like I usually do . Besides that I have managed to go through SU 1 which is very interesting and of course I learnt a thing or two from it as follows :

Holistic development is rather an approach to learning that emphasises the importance of the physical , emotional and psychological well-being of children , particularly in early childhood .

Musical development in foundation phase is of outmost importance .Children when participating in music and movement activities turn to improve their skills in various factors . In future I vow to use music in the activities I will get to teach by means of improving my learners memory , cognitive development , learning skills and expressive ability .

Therefore it is also necessary to have some knowledge of developmental theories which aid the development of children such as Erikson's stages of psychosocial development , Piaget's cognitive development theory that includes two stages namely 1. Pre-operational stage and 2.Concrete operational stage and Vygostky and the zone of proximal development theory .
