Hello Everyone,

My name is Patricia Hlabi.  I live in Mondeor, South of Johannesburg.  At this point in my life, I am a work in progress.  And we all know that learning is not easy, it comes with scars that will one day remind you that all of this was worth it, and you need to keep moving forward.  I am slightly shattered but not entirely broken. My will to keep going and persevering is stronger now more than ever. I am a mother, a wife, an employee, and a student.  I did not choose to teach; teaching chose me because I wanted to be a beacon of hope for a young girl who once was me. My dreams are to inspire, mold, and give hope to children who come from similar backgrounds to mine.  I want someone to look at me one day and say because of you, I did not give up.  Because of you, I am a doctor.  Because of you, I am a teacher or a dreamer.  I am trying extremely hard to make sure that my dream to become a teacher comes true.

Well, I am here now pursuing this career because I was once that child trapped deep in the mountains of Kudumane with no hope for the future.  An eight-year-old girl who had lost her mother and was being raised by her elder siblings and neighbors.  One of the reasons I selected Foundation Phase is that I want to be a beacon of hope for a little girl who was once me.  I want to be able to make a difference in that child's life and show them that no matter what circumstances they may be facing at the time, it does not define them and that they can be anything they want to be.  One thing I have learned and continue to learn is to never limit my dreams because I do not know how I will reach them.  The only thing you need to know is where you are going, not how you are going to get there.

I am very passionate about music.  I believe without music my life would be empty.  In music, I find joy, laughter, and comfort.  Every now and then I upload a video of myself singing or dancing on my social media platforms.  I think it's the one thing I can do to truly express my feelings.

I have a few mixed emotions about this module, mainly because I had a bad experience with LSKS last semester.  I did not fully comprehend what the lecturer expected from us and got a shock after each assignment mark.  And realizing that it was the same lecturer again, I honestly got a knot in my stomach.  However, I am planning on turning a new leaf and give it my all this semester as I was partly to blame and huge lessons were learned.   I am looking forward to working through this module successfully and give my all.

My expectations from this module are to learn as much as I can, stay focussed and disciplined and try to have a better understanding of what the lecturer expects from me as a student.

StudyUnit 4: Arts integration in the foundation phase

Art is more than just music, and I believe it should be examined further in schools. Most schools solely concentrate on music, which is fantastic, but they skip over the visual and performing arts. Learning will not only be more exciting and spontaneous when students are encouraged to exhibit their comprehension through the arts, but the teacher will also be able to better engage her students, ensuring that they retain the material learned. Our learner’s self-confidence, self-control, self-identity, conflict resolution, teamwork, empathy, and social tolerance will be developed.

Art is healing for the soul.

Study Unit 2: Responding to music

How the body responds to music is based on how the music makes you feel.  Music can make you feel happy, sad, or totally pump you up.  But in the classroom music is very beneficial and should be encouraged as it helps with the overall development of the child.  By incorporating different music elements such as body percussions can improve the learners' movement and coordination skills.  The learners' vocabulary and language can also be developed through music.

For me, music is my life.  It feeds my soul and it is something that I encourage my children to do every morning and it is amazing how your day can shift in a positive way by including music in your life.

The best part is that children learn better through play and by bringing music in your classroom not only will your learners be engaged, they will also retain the information better and for longer periods of time.

I am a Zulu teacher at school and it's amazing to watch the children sing and dance in a language that is not their mother tongue.

This study unit has taught me that there is more to music than meets the eye and learning about the different musical elements was most interesting to me.  As a singer, I thought I knew a lot but after working through this unit I realized that I actually don't know that much.  I enjoyed this unit and will take that which I have learned back to my music and the classroom.
