Hello laugh My name is Monéne Anker. I'm 20 years old and live in Polokwane.

I am a distance student, while I study I work as a student teacher at a private school in my hometown. The shools name is Akademie Reformia. It is a small school and are very religious orientated. I enjoy it a lot to work and study at the same time, because I learn so much more than I would have learn when I would have been on campus. I learn the whole routine of being in a class and gain a lot of experience in this way. The best thing of all is that I also get a salary at this age.

At first I was a bit nervous of the LSKM 221 module, because I don't really know a lot about music and all the concepts. But I am very eager to learn so that I can use it one day in my own classroom.

Hello everyone! cheeky I really can not believe that this is my final blog ! This semester went very fast but I am glad it is almost over now, I am very tired and really need a break.

Question 1:

As a LSKM 221 student I really have learn a lot this semester. In the beginning of the semester I thought that this subject would be boring because what can be so important of music? I thought that I knew a lot but I have learn so much more that I didn't have known. I now know how to work with music when I have my own class. It is an excellent way to teach your learners.

Question 2:

It was very nice to write the individual reflections because in this way you have actually recapped the work because you have think of it again to write about it to you fellow bloggers. I didn't really find anything challenging, it is not so difficult to write a blog, You literally just write it and post it.

Yes, I would say that I have found the individual reflections meaningful because I have read some of the other students reflections also and out of that you actually learn a lot. I really will not change a thing. Let's keep it this way!laugh

Question 3:

There is really nothing I would change in the LSKM 221 subject! Yes some of the information I didn't know of but when I went through the work all the information have made sense to me. If you struggle, then just go carefully through the work and you will see that it is not that difficult at all.

Have a nice day everyone! Good luck with the last few tests that are waiting on you yeswink

Byeeeee bloggers!

Part 1:

Yayyyy !! laugh It is the last study unit, time is going by so fast. I can not believe that second year are almost done. It is actually very scary to think about.

Part 2:

I have realized that a teacher can't just play certain songs or let the children sing a couple of nursery rhymes and think this has covered teaching music in the classroom; there is a lot more planning and detail that is required for music to be integrated successfully in a lesson, this can be a music lesson or it could be part of a different subjects lesson. I also learnt that music should be taught in a learner-centered approach rather than just instructing or explaining certain concepts. An effective music lesson plan should focus more on how the learners can grasp new knowledge and concepts by utilizing prior knowledge, personal experiences and ensuring that the content and concepts being taught are relatable, and accommodate all learners; different backgrounds, level of understanding, confidence and likes or interests the learners have. The teacher should really plan and consider these aspects very carefully and in as much detail as possible so that each child receives the same amount of knowledge and teaching.

Part 3:

There is a variety of reasons why assessment is neglected in the Performing Arts and Music in the Foundation Phase. Some of the reason I can think of is:

  • There is not always enough time to prepare a well-planned lesson for arts and music.
  • Sometimes there isn’t time during a day to do arts or music.
  • There is a lack or resources at the school that makes it difficult for the teacher and the kids.
  • Teachers don’t know how important music and arts really is for kids, they take that for advantage and just don’t do it because then they have more time for maths or the home language.

My perception and priorities regarding lesson planning and inclusion of music and arts has changed, because now I know how important it is. Lesson planes make it for the teacher easier to make sure all the necessary work is covered and that the kids know the must know work. I also learners that music and arts play a huge roll in a learners live and it helps them to discover themselves and that they express themselves easier through art or music. I will definitely make sure when I become a teacher that music and performing arts is included in the Foundation Phase because it is really very important for growing.

Until next time ...wink

Part 1:

Good day everyone !smiley Lucky me that I get study time at work, now I can finish this blogs so that I can spend time on my other modules as well.

Part 2:

I liked learning to identify, evaluate and select different strategies for teaching arts in the classroom. In this module, I enjoyed learning about the activities and lessons that focus on arts integration for the subject in Life Skills. I found it interesting how we can integrate Life Skills. Something I was struggling with was the values of arts integration within inclusive, multicultural classrooms.

Part 3:

It was interesting to hear about the beneficial abilities that music may help learners with. This demonstrates why it is critical to include music in the classroom. I thought the movies offered to be extremely fascinating. Where they include music into the courses by utilizing discovered instruments to play on the notes written on the board, singing according to a certain beat using words such as apple, grape, and so on. It was amazing to see how they progressed and interacted with real-life events.

Some learners and teachers might find the tasks they completed in the videos to be difficult. While reading the notes and speaking the fruit words at the same time, clapping. . I believe that explaining how to interpret notes will be difficult for a teacher. Learners will need some time to follow the beat according to the notes supplied if they are not done in a clear and straightforward manner.

Great day further cheeky

Part 1:

I am on this and ready to finish this blogs as soon as possible laugh

Part 2:

Everyone works together to produce discipline, spirit, imagination, capacity to interact, generate change, therapeutic effects, learners acquire a variety of assessment capabilities, sense, and sensitivities, and play incorporates a multiplicity of aspects.

I learned the importance of play and how to integrate aspects of play into music activities, the importance of musical play in multicultural classrooms, many forms of musical games, play characteristics, the function of musical play, and the importance of play for overall development. Play promotes physical, social, and emotional development, as well as cognitive development. Through their participation in play activities, students have the opportunity to master a variety of ideas, physical, social, and intellectual abilities

Part 3:

What possibly made some learners uncomfortable during these activities?

The boy felt uncomfortable because he could not understand the meaning of the song and did not know what the song was about. The girl was uncomfortable dancing in front of the boys to house music, because of  her religion.

Can you think of ways to address these issues in the future? What will you change?

I think what the teacher could have done was to explain the meaning of the song and the words to the whole class so that they are familiar to the content of the song. The teacher can also tell the children before the time that if they feel uncomfortable dancing due to their religion, they do not have to participate in the activity and then the teacher must make sure that the whole class understand the reason why some learners are not participating. Learners must have the boldness to come forward about their religion and beliefs, and must not be penalized.

How can we accommodate diverse learner profiles in our classrooms? What must we beware of?

Teachers must be aware of the fact that there are many kinds of diverse children in their classroom and must accommodate everyone in lessons and activities. All children should feel accepted despite their culture, religion, beliefs etc. Other learners should also be aware of the diverse profiles in their particular class.

Learning through play in the Foundation Phase is one of the most important things to incorporate in the classroom.  Not only are the learners engaged and learning is spontaneous, but music also ignites all areas of child development and skills to succeed in school.  The learners' vocabulary, language skills, emotional and social skills are developed. It also makes it easier for learners to learn and recognize sounds easily. Children learn to make decisions, govern their own behavior, meet complicated problems, and accept responsibility for their actions by developing life skills.  Through music, their confidence levels also improve.

Have a great week wink

Part 1:

Hiii cheeky I actually have totally forgot about this module ... Everything is just so hectic and I hope that it will not be a problem me doing it now !

Part 2:

It was interesting to learn that music lessons offers inclusive education goals.

I also like to learn about all the different elements that are used in a music lesson and what each of them means. It was also very insightful to look at all the ideas to incorporate music into a lesson.

Part 3:

A few more activities could be nice to see as you can never get enough help when it comes to this especially for me who has never taught music before, however, all in all I thought the content was very good  and it doesn't really need to be changed. It was easy to understand, fun and had a lot of good ideas for us to use in our own classrooms.

I chose indigenous African Music, because I think that it is very important to teach learners about the roots of all our cultures. Many learners do not have that exposure of indigenous African music, and do not know about the different cultural beliefs. I think that the content in learning unit is inclusive. It combines music with bodily movement, singing and body percussion. Learners will feel free to engage in these activities because it is so fun. I think that more subjects in school can include music. Suggestions is to make every learner part of the learning process. We can be very selective about music and dancing choices so that no learner is excluded with this whole process.
