I come from a culture of AmaXhosa, AmaXhosa are one of four nations, known as Nguni, that are found in South Africa. The AmaXhosa settled in the Eastern Cape and over time spread to the Western Cape, But i was born and raised in the Eastern Cape both my parents are Xhosa. The Xhosa nation is made up of tribes and clans. Clans are groups of families with different surnames but sharing one clan name. The initial ancestor or family that gave rise to the clan is known by the clan name. Tribes are made up of clans, while nations are made up of tribes. The spoken language is IsiXhosa, which features clicks. For instance, in English, the letters X, Q, KR, and CG represent clicks. The culture places a high value on storytelling, and storytelling is even present in music. Xhosa dance is quite amazing, particularly the umtyityimbo dance style, which calls for dancers to vibrate and shiver throughout their upper bodies. All Africans, including AmaXhosa, believe that they can converse with God through their ancestors. An imbeleko ritual is carried out to introduce a newborn to their ancestors and vice versa. An act that is considered to mark the passage from boyhood to manhood, circumcision is performed on boys when they turn eighteen. Men in the bush are educated about manhood and given guidance by elders. By doing this rite, they will be better equipped to lead, navigate life, and preserve their culture. The young men apply white ochre to their bodies during the first portion of the ritual, then red ochre during the last stages of the rite. On top of its antibacterial and anti-infection properties, ochre serves as a deodorant. Smooth and silky skin is revealed when the young men wash off all the ochre after their time in the wilderness. The ceremony known as intonjana is another way that girls move from being girls to becoming women.Xhosa people also perform facial scarification known as "ukuchaza" which is normally necessitated by the sickness of a person it could be a child or an adult , which is interpreted as a patient needing the ritual of its ancestors. Normally when people get sick they’re taking to the doctor but is our culture sometimes a child would get sick and the elderly people would just say “udinga ikhaya” which means she needs to visit her father’s family and funny enough the child gets better after visiting her father’s family to be seen by her ancestors.Xhosa people also believe that a person must observe a one-year grieving period following the death of their spouse, Depending on the traditions of their families, women dress in black or in traditional clothing, and males wear either a button covered in black cloth or a little piece of black cloth attached to the front or sleeve of their shirts. It is believed that if a person that mourn for a period of one year they will be followed by a bad luck. When the mourning period ends, a ritual of cleansing is performed. In the Xhosa culture, silence is perceived as constituting an important aspect of the behaviour of a woman, and also when an adult is speaking you are not allowed to look him straight in the eyes as it believed that is a sign of disrespect .These beliefs have moulded and shaped me and they’ve also played a huge role in how I perceive the world ,no matter where i go i will never abandon my cultural beliefs, because i am who i am today because of the way i was raised in a Xhosa family that believe in these beliefs.
