Anthropology encourages us to understand the world by making the strange familiar and the familiar strange ,this perspective invites us to examine our own beliefs and practices. I am someone who is deeply influenced by my ethnic heritage which leads to the teachings about my cultural background to have a massive impact to how I see the world ,namely the importance of the community being one and the reverence of ancestral wisdom. Community interdependence is one of the foundational teachings in my culture ,growing up I was well aware of the fact that a child is somehow raised by the whole community which led me into believing that an individual's success and well-being are in a way tied to the collective strength and support of the community as a whole. I grew up knowing that as people we need each other to survive and go through life. This collective approach taught me the importance of mutual support and interconnectivity of our lives ,it shaped my understanding of success not as an individual achievement but as a communal accomplishment as every success is celebrated by the whole community. It made me prioritize collaborative efforts rather than individual pursuits. Another important teaching from my culture is the deep acknowledgement and appreciation for ancestral wisdom. Growing up ,I was taught all about knowing that dead are spiritual guides for us the living ,ancestral wisdom is often expressed through many traditions and rituals that honor those that came before us. This belief has influenced my worldview by grounding me in a sense of history and legacy ,it encourages me to seek guidance from the past and to respect the accumulated knowledge of previous generations ,when having to make a decision I am always wary of not only considering the immediate impact but also how my actions align with the values and lessons passed down through my lineage.
In my daily life I always find myself always absorbed in diverse networks that shape my daily existence. These networks mainly consist of geographical boundaries ,embracing family, friends etc each playing a vital role in contributing to my daily life experiences and the depth of my connections. As I reflect on these networks I always explore the individuals who populate them ,the dynamics that govern our relationships and the exchanges that occur within these interconnected spheres of mylife. My first network is my family ,a group of love ,support and shared history. My family forms the nucleus around which my world revolves. Through acts of affection ,communication and shared experiences we exchange not only tangible goods and services but also emotional support ,cultural traditions and cherished memories. Our interactions are instilled with a sense of belonging rooted in the bond of kinship that transcend time and distance.I am also embraced by the network of friends who enrich my life with their diverse perspectives ,shared interests and mutual respect. These friendships span years and cultures forged through shared experiences shared laughter and shared challenges.Whether gathering for lively discussions or offering a listening ear during moments of vulnerability ,my friends are constant sources of inspiration. In our exchanges we trade not only stories and advice but unwavering support and creating a friendship that withstands the test of time. My other kinship and exchange network is school ,at school lecturers and the whole of the staff at school form interconnected communities which can also be similar to extended families. As students we develop close bonds with classmates ,schoolmates and lecturers that often lead to the formation of friendships beyond the school gates .These relationships contribute to a sense of belonging and support mirroring the dynamics of kinship networks found in a wider society. In all these relationships we give and take .We share stories, advice and help when needed.Sometimes it's tangible things like lending a hand or sharing resources but often it is intangible like offering support ,understanding and friendship. These relationships are important because they make me who I am. They give me strength ,happiness and a sense of belonging and through them I learn the value of kindness ,generosity and connection .Through kinship network we negotiate our identities and relationships reaffirming our belongingness to multiple networks simultaneously.
My everyday life is basically based on navigating through my lectures, studying, attending and sometimes a little bit of social interactions.
My mornings always consist of me either having difficulties waking up or it could utterly be a whole different situation to beginning the day with a lot of enthusiasm for waking up in the morning. As the clock hits 8am,if I am still at res I know it is time to pray and thank god for the day I woke up to see and pray for a great day ahead or most preferably a normal day ahead.
As a student I attend my lectures for that day, each day literally unfolds as an experience of which could be good or bad.Getting to campus ,entering the lecture halls, engaging with my fellow scholars, absorbing information from lecturers ,spending some of my time in the library or enjoying the expensive student centre/cafeteria food, travelling with the school bus is my everyday life.
Getting back from attending,it is either solitude or going to my friends rooms for some catching up after catch up sessions it literally depends on how tired I am ,I sometimes come back to my books or rather just chill around some more enjoying my own company ,if I am awake as the clock hits 00:00am I pray,if I am not awake i wake up and pray and end my day.
According to Chimamanda Adichie a single story creates stereotypes and the problem with stereotypes is not that they are untrue, but they make one story become the only story. The consequence of the single story is that it robs people of dignity, it makes our recognition for equal humanity difficult, it emphasizes how we are different rather than how we are similar. When we reject the single story, when we realize that there is never a single story of any place, we regain a kind of paradise.
I believe that there is many more dangers of a single story than meets the eye, I believe that a one sided story can not only cause a misunderstanding between parties but it can also be a starting factor of a rivalry and false conclusions to the parties involved. I believe that a single story does not only pose as a threat to the relationships of people but it also a factor that can also contribute to relationships never being formed. A single story does not only limit accurate opinions it is also a factor of of a certain side never being heard and limits the chances of equal humanity to be restored.
A single story does not only pose as a danger of a single story never being listened to or heard but it always leaves a mark of the truth always never being known because only one side was listened to and was taken as the only story or side that exists.
