On Unit 2 I understand the concept of Orient, it’s structures and restructuresÂ
Orient is the regions or countries lying to the east. It is an old fashioned name for Asia. Traditionally comprising anything belonging to the Easter world.
Orientalism can be discussed and analysed as the corporate institution for dealing with the orient dealing with it by making statements about it. Said detailed the changes that occurred in Orientalism in the 18th century in order to set the stage for Orientalism in the 19th century and 20th century. In contrast to the earlier Orientalism, 18th century orient was shifted from religious basis to a secular one. Said argued that this occurred because of an expansion beyond the Islamic lands to the rest of the east, and increased understanding of oriental history, a perceived relationship in histories of both East and West and the impulse to classify nature and man into types. These elements secularised Orientalism, and in return these elements led to imperialism and colonialism. Said set out to understand how this occurred, claiming this mentally toward the Orient can be understood only through the lens of history. Without the historical context of Orientalism it is impossible to understand how to formulate ideas led to imperialism and colonialism of the orient.
