My ethnical group which is Zulu their teachings or beliefs plays a vital role in how I see the world and those teachings or beliefs I was taught from childhood and they have carried me since childhood until now and they have huge influence on my values .
My great grandfather always repimend us when we were children not clean after the sun has set because it is believed that when we clean after sun has set we are chasing away people from our home and that has made me but to clean after sun has set no matters how dirty it is, I rather clean in the morning . The second teaching or belief is that after an animal is slaughtered the women cooks it's blood and then the man of the house eat that blood because it is believed that it gives them powers and that made me believe that men are dominant over women and they are powerful. The last one is that after a ceremony is done the day after , the waste from traditional beer which is called amavovo in my labguage is being sprinkle around the house so that ancestors could eat and to show that we acknowledge them has members and protectors of our lives and our home.
The social networks that I am going reflect on is kinship relationship where I had an access to a free VIP ticket to a event because my aunt have access to cultural capital because of qualification and skills she has in marketing which led her to be marketing manager at ZigZag cafe . Which then means that my aunt have access to economic capital and I have access to social capital because I know someone at higher level that has allowed me to access something that I would not have access to because the ticket are very expensive especially the VIP one's.
In my domestic household there is generalised reciprocity because my mother has done lot of things for me , my aunt and my little sister that we cannot keep track of and also us doing things for her which are impossible to be countered. My mother posses economic capital bacause she has access to money since she is working and that she owns a property that we reside in and also she posses cultural capital beacause she has skills and knowledge that enable her to take care of us by buying us things , cooking for us and cleaning after us and in return especially me and my aunt babysitting my little sister and running errands for her is a form of generalized reciprocity because it how we were taught from a younger age that we must look after one another without expecting things back and without complaint. The things we do for each other me and my aunt are a lot and it very much hard to count and we do things that we do not expect things back and we do not care about the value whether they cost so much money or not , for example about a month ago my aunt bought me KFC for my birthday and for her birthday day before yesterday I bought fries and bread with coldrink, these things have different values and this is another example of generalised reprocity.
In my domestic household we are obligated to care for one another and my obligation with my family is for a very long period of time from since I was born and still continuing until I die. I cannot remove myself from this kind of relationship because we are blood related and it is a norm and belief that we care for our families until we die
Through the the care and the things we do for one another there is belonging involved because I have sense of belonging in the relationship I have with my aunt that she will always do things for me as much I will always do things for her regardless of value of the things . And also I have sense of belonging in my family especially my mother because I am certain that she always have my back and she will be always be right by my side regardless of what I do .
Annoying alarm wake me up in the morning about 6 o clock , I feel tired has I slept in the dawn because I was studying . I got into the shower and I feel the soothing hot water on my body which relaxes my muscles , spent more time in the shower than I asual am . I go out of the shower and apply body lotion on my body which smells so nice like roses and do other necessary things like putting on my clothes and brush my hair and other things that people do when they prepare to go somewhere smelling nice and looking good. I prepare my self a cereal to gain vitamin B1 which gives energy that I need to get through my day . And walk to bus stop to wait for the bus .
My rite of separation is preparing to go to class by waking up , showering , wearing , eating and waiting for the bus. These activities are separating me from my current status of being resident.
The bus finally arrives and we get in and as I sit comfortably there is conversation of stress of tests and almost everyone is stressed even the house commitee leaders and that made me realize how university tests are difficult to even stress the people i looked up to.
The phase of liminality is when I got into the bus and everyone was worried of the upcoming test and everyone was in the moment of anxienty of the test weeks .There was communitas has the hierarchy of leaders and students was removed , even the house commitee leaders were worried and anxious.
I go into the class and the lessons was conducted, I attended two classes which the other class was at 1 pm and had lunch at the student centre which I ate a sandwich and cold drink . I left after lunch to go to res and I cooked and do my homework and study for upcoming sociology test .
Rite of reincoparation
As leave the campus and getting into the bus and arriving at res I return to my fixed status which is being a resident and doing which I asual do cooking and writing my homework.
What it is that we always judge people because they are different from us , it is because we are stereotypes, to us difference means inferior and we don't want them to infect us with their violence, dirty and careless.
The origin of stereotype
Stereotype was established in the era of colonization when Europeans saw Africans as being primitive society which needed saving from hunting for food and being unskilled. As Wainana mentioned that Africans were seen miserable and the food that was eaten was portrayal of how unhuman Africa is as a country. And European was there to help make African people be civilized. The Ted Talk by Ngozi conveys how Africans did not get the chance to tell their story and that stereotypes are not only incomplete but they make one story become the only story.
Stereotypes within ethnical groups
Within South Africa stereotypes was caused by Apartheid, the law of Native Reserves. This led people not to see themselves as diverse but superior over others because of different culture and language. To believe that Zulu tribe are stubborn and Xhosa tribe are liars have resulted people being afraid to build relationships because of information that was passed from suffered apartheid elders and the generation was left to suffer the results of their believes. Stereotype also brought positivity as some stereotypes are tru as Pedi tribe practice witchcraft and Colored tribe are violent as saved lot of people out there not to be victims of such treatment
Stereotypes has caused stigmazation and Africa is the proof of that . Another Ted talk by William states that Africa is continuously shown that is poor through advertisements aid from European countries to implement that African is poor and still need the kind European savior. Diversity doesn't exist within the world.
