IN THIS BLOG ENRTY I WILL BE DISCUSSING WAYS IN WHICH LANGUAGE IS AND HAS BEEN USED TO SHAPE AND FORM OUR UNDERSTANDING OF OTHERS THROUGH OTHERING AND EXOTICIZATION,AS WELL AS HOW THIS HAS IMPACTED MY OWN UNDERSTANDING OF DIVERSITY AND IDENTITY.
OTHERING
-I UNDERSTAND THAT THIS IS HOW ONE WOULD VIEW A GROUP OF PEOPLE AS "DIFFERENT AND INHUMAN TO SELF",AS I HAVE READ IN WAINANA (2005) THAT WESTERNERS VIWED PEOPLE FROM AFRICA AS PEOPLE OF POVERTY,VOICELESS AND EXOTIC DUE TO THE FACT THAT AFRICANS HAD A DIFFERENT TYPE OF LIVING,BY THE CLOTHES THEY WORE(ANIMAL SKIN),THE WAY THEY GOT THEIR FOOD(THROUGH HUNTING)THEIR MODES OF TRANSPORT.THIS BROUGHT APON MISINFORMATION AND AN UNPLEASENT VIEW OF AFRICA AND IT'S PEOPLE.
EXOTICIATION
-ACCORDING TO MY UNDERSATNDING,THIS IS WHEN ONE REGARDS SOMEONE AS EXOTIC OR OF A FOREIGN.AS I READ AND UNDERSTOOD FROM WAINANA(2005),IT BECAME CLEAR TO ME THAT WESTERNERS HAD UNFAIRLY POTRAYED AFRICANS AS EXOTIC AND DIFFERENT,SIMPLY BECAUSE THEY DID NOT SHARE THE SAME SKIN COLOR.THEY WERE SEEN AS UNSUAL EVEN DESPITE HAVING THE SAME BASIC FEATURES.IT IS SHOCKING THAT SOME EVEN WENT AS FAR AS TO MEASURE AFRICAN SKULLS AND USE THEIR SIZE TO CLAIM THAT AFRICANS WERE LESS INTELLIGENT THAN WESTERNERS.THIS DISTORTED VIEW OF AFRICA AS BOTH DISTURBING AND UNJUST.
IN CONCLUSION,I HAVE CONCLUDED AND UNDERSTOOD THAT THEV REPRESENTATIONOF PEOPLE WITHOUT CLEAR RESEARCH OR UNDERSTANDING DEMOLISHES A PERSON'S IMAGES.I FULLY UNDERSTAND THAT THE RIGHT USE OF LANGUAGE BRINGS APON PROPER PRESENTATION OF PEOPLE,AND POTRAYS THE RIGHT IMAGE THAT DOES NOT OFFEND PEOPLE OF A CERTAIN ETHIC.
As an African child or child of color a lot is brought upon me that can influence of my view of the world and how those views have shaped me. The first belief that really had a positive impact on the way i view the world is the belief of UBUNTU, the idea of Ubuntu, which is based on the African belief that people are interconnected and dependent on each other is the first indigenous teaching that i find to be meaningful. Ubuntu lays a strong emphasis on the value of respect, kindness and community. I now have empathy for others and a sense of togetherness with them which motivates me to constantly work towards peace and unity in relationships. This belief has helped me view the world in a sense of love, care and support. The second one is political teachings/beliefs where my worldview has been influenced by political views and movements like black lives matter that helps me see that even though we as black people have secured a certain level of freedom but we are still under the oppression of unfairness and i as part of the youth have learnt that i have to fight for my "share of the pie" so that future generations of my ethnic group do not have to suffer for much as i have.
Interactions with people are very important as they build ones social activity and social awareness of what is around he/she. I have been part of different networks as a student and as a person generally in my personal life, to begin with, i have networks with my lectures and fellow academics/students at school and i also have networks outside of school with my peers and family members and work colleague when i am outside of school. To begin with, in my networks of being a student and interacting with my lectures on a day-to-day basis there is an exchange of talk and information/knowledge, i expect my lecture to provide me with the correct information of the module he/she is teaching me and in return i have to show through the exams or tests i will be writing the knowledge i have gathered from him/her. Though this may be a little bit one sided as i am the sole beneficiary of the information exchanged but i too get to exchange my understanding of what i have been taught and add on as to what i may know personally, this type of exchange shall go on up until i have received my desired qualification. Another network i am part of is between me and my colleagues/employer at work, i am a basketball coach at a private school and the reason i was hired was to teach and give knowledge of the sport of basketball to young athletes, the form of exchange between me and my employer is that he has hired me to coach and help improve the skills of these athletes and in return he pays me on a monthly basis for my work and this type of interactive network is beneficial not only for employer and employee but also the athletes at hand. Thirdly i have interactions with my peers and family members, a network of social activity and responsibility as a child at home, with my peers there is a level of exchange of communication to keep the friendship healthy ,the interactiveness between us could be of educational purposes as we may meet up to share certain information that we have learnt from a lecture and share each other's understandings and knowledge of that module/topic. Lastly i have networks with y family, in my family i am the first born of two children and i am expected to be a leader to my sibling, a submissive and respective child to my mother and in exchange i receive filiation for respecting rues set between me and my parents and family members. Those are just the type of networks i have in my life and the type of exchanges and they people part of my daily networks.
As i wake up on a friday morning, going through my morning routine of meditation and check my messages as usual i then come across a text that told me that my favourite basketball team is playing in pretoria,i quickly called koketso my friend letting him know that we must hurry nd get the tickets before they sell out,we quickly head on the internet and buy them, securing our seats to this highly energetic goosebump giving entertainment of a game,
we then took a bus to the sun arena at mid noon,in the bus talking about how much they game will be interesting and how much intensity it will bring to the fans watching. We then got to the arena and checked in with our tickets and passed by the food stands to get game snacks and then moved to our sits, the game started and from the go it was all high energy and we were chanting and supporting ourn home team along with the other group of supporters that were at the game,it was an intense game and at the end the home team won by a point,it left the opposing team in awe as they thought they would cruise easily over the S.A TIGERS.
The fame had ended and we were so glad that we were represented well by our home team,it was then time for us to come back to home,we caught a bus back home, when i got home i took an shower and ate, hopped on my cellphone and shared the experience on my social pages just like any sport fan would do,a couple of minutes later i opened my books and started studying,i barely lasted 30 minutes i zoned off to sllep with my book in my hand.
The rights of separation-happens when i wake up in the morning and recieve a message that there is a basketball game,it removes me from my everyday activity as i found myself hurrying up to get to get game tickets with my friend.
the liminal phase-happens on my way to the game and at the arena were i interact with other people enjoying the intensity of the basketball game and cheering along with everyone, supporting the home team up until the end of the game.
the rights of inco-operation-happens when i get home to my same old home routine and i am back to being Masonwabe the student.
IN THIS BLOG ENTRY, I WILL BE DISCUSSING WAYS IN WHICH LANGUAGE IS AND HAS BEEN USED TO SHAPE AND FORM MY UNDERSTANDING OF OTHER ETHICS THROUGH OTHERING AND EXOTICIZATION,AS WELL AS HOW THIS HAS IMPACTED MY VIEW OF DIVERSITY AND IDENTITY.
OTHERING
I UNDERSTAND THAT THIS IS HOW I AS ONE VIEW A GROUP OF PEOPLE AS "DIFFERENT AND INHUMAN TO SELF",CREATING A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THEM AND ME.AND AS I HAVE READ IN WAINANA(2005),WESTERNERS VIEWED AFRICA AND ITS PEOPLE AS A PLACE OF POVERTY,VOICELESS AND EXOTIC DUE TO HOW AFRICANS LIVED A DIFFERENT LIFE THROUGH THE WAY THEY GOT THEIR FOOD(THROUGH HUNTING) AND THE TYPE OF CLOTHING THEY HAD(ANIMAL SKIN) ETC.THIS THEN HAS BROUGHT APON MISINFORMTION AND WRONG PRESENTATION OF AFRICA AND ITS PEOPLE.
EXOTICIZATIONN
ACCORDING TO MY UNDERSTANDIG,THIS IS WHEN I REGARD ONE AS EXOTIC OR OF A FOREIGN BECAUSE THEY ARE FROM A DIFFERENT ETHIC UNLIKE MINE.AS IMREAD AND UNDERSTOOD FROM WAINANA (2005),OT WAS CLEAR THAT WESTERNERS HAD UNFAIRLY POTRAYED AFRICANS AS EXOTIC,SIMPLY BECAUSE THEY BDID NOT SHARE THE SAME SKIN COLOR AS THEM.THEY WERE SEEN AS UNUSUAL EVEN DESPITE HAVING THE SAME BASIC FEATURES.IT BECAME SHOCKING TO ME THAT SOME EVEN MEASURED AFRICAN PEOPLES SKULLS TO CLAIM THAT AFRICANS WERE LESS INTELLIGENT THAN WESTERNERS.THIS VIEW OF AFRICA AND ITS PEOPLE WASCUNJUST AND DISTURBING.
I HAVE CONCLUDE AND FOUND UNDERSTANDING THAT THE REPRESANTATION OF PEOPLE WITHOIT PROPER RESEARCH AND FROM JUST ASSUMPTIONS DEMOLISHES A PERSONS IMAGES.I AM NEGATIVELY IMPACTED ABOUT HOW WE AS AFRICANS ARE VIEWD BY WESTERNERS BUT ALSO HAVE LEARNT THAT WITH THE RIGHT USE OF LANGUAGE,COMES GOOD REPRESENTATION.
