The danger of a single story
According to Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie single stories can have negative impact they can rob people off their dignity and emphasize how we are different rather how we are similar. ''The single story creates stereotypes and the problem with stereotypes is not that they aren't true, but they are incomplete they make one story become the only story''.
Negative stereotypes can lead to what is not known to be true, something that is believed to be false because of the beliefs one has for that specific country, individuals or a certain group of people. They can also lead to conflicts due misunderstandings that people have against each other .Positive serotypes gives us courage and power to consider stories of other people without criticizing them because of untrue beliefs and wrong information about their countries for example Africa is known for high rate of unemployment, crime etc. so basically other people from other countries believe that people from Africa are poor, unskilled, desperate and they are not capable of doing something of their own they have nothing to offer besides crime and all that , yes, it's true but not all Africans. The only way to overcome stereotype is to try sympathizing with other people have empathy for them, educate us about different cultures and groups, put us in their shoes learn more about their situation and communicate with other people ask them questions if you want to know something about them, their culture religion and beliefs.
