My ethnic background

As someone who identifies with both the Xhosa and Venda ethnic groups through my parents...my mother being Xhosa and father being Venda. I've grown up with a rich background of cultural teachings and beliefs that have significantly shaped my worldview and continue to influence my perspective on life. From my Xhosa heritage the concept of "Ubuntu " (a teaching) is central to the culture and is encapsulated in the phrase "Umuntu ngumuntu ngabantu" which is loosely translated as "A person is a person through other people"...the phrase essentially puts emphasis on the importance of interconnectedness of all people, community, compassion as well as mutual respect. It teaches one that our humanity is tied to the humanity of others ,fostering a sense of shared responsibility and collective wellbeing (belief).

Within the Venda tribe ,our people believe in the sanctity of nature , viewing it as a source of life and a connection to our ancestors. This respect for nature is evident in our sustainable agricultural practices, conservation of natural resources and reverence for sacred sites like Lake Fundudzi (belief). These teachings from Xhosa and Venda heritage have played a crucial role in shaping my values and worldview. Ubuntu has taught me the importance of community and compassion, while the Venda's respect for nature has instilled in me a commitment to environmental sustainability. Together , these beliefs and teachings guide my actions and interactions, helping me navigate the complexities of modern life with a grounded perspective.
