Looking up at what the meaning of stereotype I read that 'stereotype implies that the observation is based on an essential quality of the population...' but I define stereotypes as a false classification concept .
Growing up I was categorized as a 'white girl' or a 'coconut' by my neighbors as well as people I used to call my mates then .Being in a multiracial school was an unusual thing in my black-dominated township. Just because 'ek het Afrikaans baie goed gepraat' i was being called several names. I used to take so much offense back then until I was old enough to understand the exact meaning behind their stereotype. Majority of the were raised by their grandparents and I believe their grandparents would tell them how each race attended different learning institutions back then. It somehow became a stereotype that 'black' children don't get taught any other language besides their home languages and English.
Looking back at the work of th TEDTalks by Ngozi it gives us a view on the common nature of stereotypes. Ngozi briefly explains and make us aware of how a minor narrative can cause an enormous harm to societies. Stereotypes can really go along way and escalate from generation to generation. At this I feel like it's high-time our society see and realize how diverse not only our country but our continent at large is. ''The problem with stereotypes is not that they are untrue ,but that they are incomplete. They make one story become the only story.' -Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
