One of the beliefs I acknowledge from my ethnic group is that men are seen as the father of the house and take leadership over his family. This is not only influenced as the breadwinner of the family but as a religious belief that there should be a father figure to lead his household. This includes providing safety and security also providing basic needs and love. A second belief my cultural group has is respect for the elderly. Even though they are still seen as young people when they are 10 years older than us they are known as an aunt and uncle. This respect will include that they seat before the children do and they dish up food before the children do and the children must listen to them. For others this can be different, there are other cultures that call older people by their names and children dish up before the elderly. And in some household’s woman are the head of the house that do not belief that a man should be the head of the house and the breadwinner. This is a clear explanation of cultural diversity and how we experience different realities on a daily basis.

Kinship is a very important part of every person’s life and it shows the way people are connected to one another. It defines a person’s personality and surroundings. Kinship is also the connection between people for example, blood related, marriage, relatives. I do have a big family to start with. Firstly, there is my parents who I was born from and they both have siblings. My father has a sister that I am very close to known as my aunt. She taught me life lessons and the history of our family tree. She has 2 daughters known as my cousins that spend a lot of time with them and go on regular camping trips together. We also used to have sleep overs and nail and hair days where we would all go to the salon to get our hair and nails done. They are both a bit older than me and my brother. My brother and I differ 3 years, he is the oldest. On the other side of the family I have an aunt and an uncle (my mother’s brother and sister). Her brother lives in Oudshoorn near George and her sister lives in our hometown. We go to Mosselbaai every December to visit them and take a little holiday to relax on the beach! A vacation is well needed after varsity. We do not see them as often only a few days in December. It is always the best time to celebrate Christmas with them because when we were little my cousins and I used to play all these childhood games and create dances for our parents to let us have a sleep over. This shaped our social structure and culture. Every year we had a sleep over and family time for Christmas and it is known as our social structure and culture.
