As we all know that we come from different backgrounds. Ethnic groups also add to why we have different backgrounds. Every ethnic group has norms that need to be followed and most of the time if you do not follow these norms there are consequences to face. In our zulu culture we have this belief which is about our clan names. In our clan names we have surnames which we sort of relate to them. For example my surname is Ndlela so the clan surnames that I relate to them are Ntuli and Mbhele. So we are expected to not get married to these surnames and fi you get married to these surnames you may give birth to a disable child which is true because I have witnessed it. My aunt got married to one of these surnames and her first born was disable. In order for her to avoid getting other disable children they had to perform ritual which will break bond that these surnames have. So they had to buy white cow which it is used to perform this ritual. Another belief is that we have animals which signify our ancestors. As I'm Ndlela the animals that signify our ancestors is a green snake and green insects. They said if ever you see one of these animals just know that ancestors have visited you. We should not kill the. Whenever we see them.
Today was a busy as tomorrow it is my birthday. I am hosting a birthday picnic celebration as I turn 20 years but overall a fulfilling one.
I woke up ar 8 o'clock with a sound of my alarm clock beeping in my ears. As I open the curtain the sun is shining brightly and the streets are quit I guess people are already in their workplaces or classes. I got off the bed and took a shower. So usually when I shower I listen to kelvin momo songs, he is my favorite dj and his songs start up my day positively. After showing I brushed my teeth.
After brushing my teeth I went back to my room to clean it up. As I am cleaning up my room my m8nd is thinking about tomorrow like will it be an enjoyable birthday celebration, wil people come to my celebration but anyways we will see about that tomorrow. I headed to kitchen to make quick breakfast which is a toast and scrambled eggs and coffee. Smell pf the coffee invaded my senses and woke me up as I prepare a day ahead.
It was already 10 o'clock where I got a call from my boyfriend to check up on me. He knows that I'm lazy so hw wanted to see if I was preparing for my birthday picnic celebration. He was happy to hear that I am still doing this and I didn't cancel. I dropped a call and went to a mall. One of my res mate accompanied me. I didn't know what to buy for my birthday picnic celebration so I visited every shop hoping I will get an idea if I see nice things. I chose to sit down and think about it properly. After some fem minutes I had an idea. I started by buying food such as fruits, wines and snacks. After buying food I went to another shop to buy balloons, glasses and flowers of course. After I got what I wanted me and my res mate we were so hungry and she was complaining already about the hunger so we went to grape some lunch as the air was filled with delicious spicy wings and burgers making my mouthwatering. I got to Rocco Mama's to buy lunch.
After we were done eating, we had live now because we had some school work to do so I requested an Uber to take us back to the Res. It was 6pm late. I did not think it will take time but it did. I was feeling grateful to be able to buy things for my celebration. I was so tired as sounds of cars and scents of this day were still on my mind. So I drifted off to sleep. I woke up I 11pm as I had an assignment which was due in 15 March so I started with it but I didn't finish it because it was late around 2am so I had to sleep in order to be ready for classes and my late night birthday picnic celebration.
The danger of a single story creates othering. Othering is creating difference viewing of others as primitives. Europeans sent anthropologists to study indigenous groups in Africa. They called these indigenous groups as primitives societies. They immersed themselves within societies and gain access to insider valuable information. They called them Primitive societies because they are not modernized still using their traditional norms and they do not have all resources. They called themselves as civilized society because they see themselves more advance than primitive societies and they have all resources.
When anthropologists arrived in African Societies and saw that they are not doing and living the way they do. Wainaina's said that western writes usually focus on certain themes such as war, poverty and exotic wildlife while ignoring the diversity and complexity of African Societies. Chimamanda Ngozi discussed " The danger of a single story" in her TedTalk. When she went to Oversee to study there, her roommate was a white person. Her roommate was shocked that she was able to use things such as iron for her clothes and knows how to speak English fluently. It shows that after anthropologists gathered information about indigenous groups they painted them as Primitive societies who needs to be taught about certain things as they are stuck in their traditional ways and need to be rescued from themselves.
The anthropologists had created danger as they have painted a certain image to every indivis about other people . As they use books to create image about us makes it easier for individuals to believe what is wrote in these books as they are the ones that travel the world to gather information about other indigenous groups and write them down. Books are the powerful tool use to paint image to individual's mind.
