When looking at Chimamanda’s danger of a single story I can relate to the new experience of coming to university with thousands of people moving around you and struggling to mingle and getting to know new people. With so many people who has different backgrounds and different stories, it’s so difficult to relate to someone and find something that makes you comfortable.

Everyone tries to make their story stand out more than the next person, so there are no connections being made, thus it means people’s stories aren’t being herd. People than feel left out, don’t make friends, or take time to meet someone who they can relate to, which was the case of my first 2 years of coming to Potchefstroom. Fitting into a place and getting a social group in my opinion is one of the most important things for a person to grow individually.

Understanding the danger of a single story is crucial in fostering a more empathetic, inclusive, and nuanced view of the world. By recognizing the limitations of single narratives and actively seeking out multiple perspectives, we can build a richer, more comprehensive understanding of each other and our shared humanity. (196)
