Growing up in a Xhosa Tribe

18 May 2024, 01:14 Publicly Viewable

I grew up in a Xhosa tribe. I grew up in a family where they believed in traditional rituals such as "Imbekelo". I was surrounded by people with different cultures and norms. As I was growing up, I have learnt many things which then changed the way I think in my entire life. The teaching I got from my family we never washed clothes on Sunday or do any house chores, it was a normal thing that every Sunday we go to church. In our cultural tradition, it is customary for couples to begin their marital journey with a traditional wedding ceremony, followed by a white wedding celebration. It is allowed for a man to have many wives as he wants especially when you're a king in the society. Boys go to initiation schools, then when they come back it is expected for them to act different because they are no longer boys but men. I was thought by my family that a women can never enter a kraal without wearing long dress. These beliefs and norms have influenced the way we act in our society and the way we associate with other people. Men are expected to be more powerful and protect their families while women are expected to be strong and caring for their families and society.

Reciprocity refers to the mutual exchange of goods or favors between individuals or groups. In this process, both the giver and the receiver derive benefits from the interaction Homans and Gouldner (1958).

My personal networks family and friends, we relate to each other by exchanging love, care, and emotional support so these shared experiences strengthen our bonds. We also relate to each other by exchanging goods to each other such as clothes and other stuff to build strong relationships. Around my Neighbours we exchange thoughts, vegetables, food and clothes together to create or build strong relationship within the society. We also relate to each other by promoting cooperation, build trust and share responsibilities. we also exchange goods by contributing to our well-being and we provide a sense of belonging within the society.

Economic networks, in the marketplaces I exchange money for goods and services such as food, clothes, and other stuff. This also contribute to the development of the economy and creates employment within the society. At school we share information with our colleagues for better experience and for better knowledge.

Stereotypes are generalizations or assumptions made about a group of people based on their characteristics such as race, age or religion.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                           In Africa there are eleven official languages that are used by different people. Sometimes these languages are used in a bad way because people tend to use them to manipulate others who does not understand a certain language. Different languages mostly affect the blacks as they do not understand many languages.  Using a language that is not understood by many people can lead to misinformation as people will not understand what is being said because of the language that is used. The use of language literature in Africa can lead to loneliness people as they will not be able to communicate with others.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                       In conclusion:                                                                                                                                                             The use of language literature in Africa must be used correctly so that each and everyone can feet in any language and the language of their preference.
